I'm a teacher in China.I teach the senior middle school for three years.During these years,I find so many troubles, about teachers, students also chinese education.
At the beginning of my work.My target is so broad.I hope all my students will enter the colleage successful. But as moer and more people obtain university degrees, the purpose of higher education is debated.
Chinese education is different from other country. We value knowledge, but ignor ability.
Tht morden university generated the ability, means and motivation to achieve great things, but university education in many school cannot provide students with the depth of knowledge needed to develope the wisdom and character required to know and do the right things.
It seems to be no relation between the senior education and university education. My problem is what shall i do and how to do.We should pay attention to knowledge, ability or both two?Where is the purpose of education?

Hi,there! I understand exactly what you're worried about and why you're so depressed about the situation. Nowadays in china, the education is somehow not very practical. Many colleage students couldn't really do the work after they graduate. As a teacher, you're supposed to train their ability as well as show knowledge to them.I think you'd better care about both of them. Don't be too worried.I'm sure you can be a good teacher:)

thank you very much!I also think the most important thing is to tell the children how to train their ability, when they get the degree they could work easily.

pardon, but i don't it's asking the purpose of education... instead it's the teacher's responsibility to make students realize the higher purpose of education. education is a teacher's craft.
It's when we make our students better than ourselves or better than they thought they can be.
There's no dilemma about choosing between knowledge and ability. Teachers should provide students these knowledge and the the environment by which this knowledge is applied, this one defines ability.

The purpose of education is to make yourself a better human being.education helps you to understand each other better.you set a standard in all your activites and they way you behave to others.ofcourse it is a way of identifying one's qualities and developing new skills.education is all about knowing you in yourself.once you are educated its your duty to spread this light of life to others.Education can be used for self development but never for a selfish motive.it must aimed at the development of nation and inturn human society.i am reaally thankful to my parents for givng me good education that has made me capable to give a reasonably good reply to this discussion.

It really depends on your philosophical orientation...ours is to train and form students to become productive members of society, who can bring Christ to the workplace, and who in turn transmits culture...it's a socializing agent that keeps culture alive and going. I guess without education, there will be no scientists, botanists, archaeologists, counselors, farmers, etc. We do value knowledge, habits, formation of the right attitudes and skills...

The purpose of education is to provide both knowledge and ability. They are like Cement and sand. Only with a mix of cement and sand you can build a strong building. Like that both knowledge and ability are to be mixed and told, only then the student community will stand strong and compete with others. Try to write articles in Chinese news papers, how important is this one. Nothing will happen if you write articles on this and I am defenite that you will have some followers to support you.

hi! i am also a teacher from Philippines. in our country, we cherished and give importance to education. children/students will not appreciate education if the state itself doesn't promote one. I beleive that in order for education to be important to everybody, we must instill the core value of being educated. MAny poor families really want their children to finish their studies, because they believe thats the only way that will alleviate them from poverty. education is just like a treasure. you gain and develop knowledge and thses cannot be taken away from you by anybody. at the same time education is considered as investmen.

well , education have alot of purposes. For one thing it can help you learn how to speak , which is very very important. Others are for counting and everything.Being educated is a achievement you can be very proud of.

I believe that the debate over the higher education's role is not only performed in China but also in other countries. It is not surprising because the people wants to get a good education for their kids. Good education means that teachers should teach their students to use their knowledge in order to bring goodness for themselves. They can use their knowledge so that it will bring something that can be useful not only for themselves but also for others. Teachers should be a role model to their students. They also have to guide students what is right and what is wrong. However, you can't change characters of your students. Character is difficult to be changed but you can direct and guide it so that their good characters can always show on top of others. As a teacher, you're not responsible if your students are not wisdom because reaching wisdom will depend on other environments (i.e., family, peers, parents, life experience, etc.). Each person has different degree of it. I think a good teacher can emphasize both knowledge and ability. A good teacher will show examples to their students so that they can also realize their abilities.

My brother sent me a picture which drawed by his son . The little boy is five years old . When I received it , I coundn't image that is drawed by him . Yeah , It is incredible good , I must say .The space imaginalbe ability is better than me . But I worry about how long his interest can last ? You know , my sister 's daughter also once liked drawing , but after her went into middle school , she is no longer intersted in it . What makes her interest changing or disappearing ? I really don't know . But I wanna say ,maybe because she must be in response to her too much courses .

education is the process of wasting ur 1/4 part of ur life to understand how to waste remaining 3/4.
well this is just the text message i got few months back, but it looks funny and truth.
nobody cares abt education, they are just doing it for a degree.

the purpose of education is to create awareness of various topics. knowing things deeply is purely based on individual's curiosity and his interests.

for a country to value education, the government must support its objective. But if corruption is rampant, there will be no change no matter what effort a teacher makes. In other countries, education is not a big deal because they can easily earn money without a diploma. And maybe this is one of the reasons why don't finish their studies.

hey man..
"it seems to be no relation between the senior education and university education" . I agree with you. I am a Chinese student college student . I have come into the College for more than two years , but it seems that what I learned in senior middle school is useless here.

Well, I'm a university student in China.
I don't like the education received in Middle school. It's a kind of cramming style. Everyone we just keep on studying and studying. But how to say, it's such a kind of education that really helped me to get into the university.
Sometimes teachers want to change the way, but it really needs a lot of time. So don't be too hasty just let it develop in its way. But make sure that try to find the good points in every student.

I am more concerned in how to teach, would you please share some of your experience in this area?
the concern you mentioned is so complicated, you should make it more clear and break it down into sevreal parts for better understanding.
