Would you take pen in hand, and sit down and write to your online friends?

What would you do, if you found out that the internet was no longer going to exist, as of a certain date? Would you obtain as many 'snail mail' addresses as you could, and correspond with them, 'the old-fashioned' way? Are your friendships based solely on the ability to communicate online? Have you 'met' people that have become an important part of your life, that you'd want to continue your friendship with? No need to 'mention names' here, but I'm just wondering how you'd react, if this happened.

I've written letters/cards to most of the people that I have 'known' for 2 or 3 years, I much prefer it to being online no matter how convenient it is. Then again i prefer writing books rather than reading them, glutton for punishment, I.

I'm so used to being online, but I'm convinced that I'd be able to make the transition back to writing letters and cards again, if necessary. Actually, I still enjoy doing this, once I get going with it. I too, enjoy creative writing too. Thanks for your response.

The internet definitely isn't the only way to keep in touch with friends. It's just such a convenient way. Thanks for your response.

That's tough. I'm bad at writing emails to people so I think I'd be even more horrible with writing letters to people. Plus, Postage is SO expensive these days. I'd probably just keep in touch over the phone rather than keeping in touch through "snail mail" to be honest.

Keeping in touch via phone, is definitely another way to go, raychill. I think I'd do that if I could, along with the letter writing. Thanks for your response.

I have meet one person online who we exchanged addresses. She has sent me gifts and letters. And I have sent her things. I think if I find someone that I feel I have become a real friend with I would get their address and keep in touch.

Hi isaiah12, That's great that you and your online friend, are able to do this. I too would get the addresses of the special friends I've made online, and keep in touch this way. Thanks for sharing. Take Care.:)

Hi,there! Well,if the condition is not that internet won't exist one day,I would certainly choose to write to my online friends through email addresses. But if the internet is no long there, then I think I would prefer the traditional way cause I really think that's a nice way to get contact with the other person. It feels good to write and it also feels good to receive letters:) My friendships won't only be based online,if it's possible,I may meet some online friends. But that's not too common so far.

I'm glad to here that you'd still get in contact with these friends. I think it's a good feeling to write and receive letters too, despite the internet. It'd be great to meet some online friends as well, but like you've said, it's hard to do this, as everyone is so scattered geographically. Thanks for your response.

wow thats a good question! I probably would not. I have a lot of real life friends and it would be hard enough to correspond with them. I have problems with my right wrist due to overuse at my former place of work. My hands ache when I write for too long.

Thanks, Monkeyrose. I tend to phone my offline friends, and like you, have problems with my wrists and hands. I would however, take it slow, and write to the special friends that I've made online. Thanks for sharing.

First of all its hard to imagine a life without internet.now regarding writing letters i really doubt if i would because i am a lazy kind of a person and i admit i wont be doing it.i know its really bad leaving your friends because of your laziness.the problem i am not able to exactly tell you what i would be doing then.hope such a situation never comes.but one thing is sure i will surely ring up my friends and talk to them.

I know of many people who aren't good at writing letters, but as you've said, there's always the phone. I too hope that this situation never 'really occurs.' Thanks for your response.

Yes it would be time consuming, but well worth it, to keep in touch with special 'former online friends.' Thanks for your response.

LOSE THE INTERNET?? We are joking here, right? LOL Seriously, there are some that I would and some that I wouldn't. Most of my friends online I already have snail-mail addresses for although there's a few I don't. But some of the ppl I know online are just aquaintences and I'm not sure if we'd keep in touch if we didn't bump into each other off and on online. I do keep up my letter writing skills by writing to my Dad since he isn't online. "COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS" **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

Hi twoey68, I'm glad to hear that you still keep up your letter writing skills, as in many ways, it's become a lost art. Like you, some I've met online are more acquaintances, while others have become very good friends. Thanks for sharing. Take Care.:)

No. Sorry to say, but I am horrible at writing letters. I don't even write my Grandmother!! And she lives all alone so far away from us all. It's really sad...

Hi ChaJudLeoBit, I too have become horrible at writing letters. But I don't mind doing so, once I get started. I get 'writer's cramp' very easily as well, due to problems with my wrists and hands. Thanks for your response.

Considering how bad I have been at keeping in touch with friends when the internet is working I guess this sounds bad but I really would try and get snail mail addresses from quite a few friends and I would try to keep in touch! Sure it would not be as erasy but it would be great waiting on letters arriving and finding out all the latest news wouldn't it? I guess that means I would like to keep in touch with some very special friends I have made online! xxx

Hi mummymo, I'm so happy to see you here!:) I don't think you're bad at keeping in touch at all, and you have so much to deal with. I'd love to get some letters in my mailbox, come to think of it, instead of all of the bills, and just plain junk. I'd definitely want to keep in touch with my special online friends too. Thanks for sharing, and take care. xxx

OMG...shhh..what a horrible idea! No internet?? Don't even think it! :( I have to admit I've gotten a bit lazy about actually writing a letter the old fashioned way and love to email my cyber friends privately. I do have the email addresses of quite a number of my friends, but yes if **gasps** the internet was to be no more, you better believe I would get the addresses of my cyber friends REAL fast as I would most definitely want to keep in contact as SO many I have a real bonding and connection with

Hi pyewacket, Sorry, I'll keep my voice down, then nobody will be the wiser.;) I too, love to send private e-mails etc., and if such a thing 'ever did happen,' I'd be scrambling to obtain the addresses I don't have yet. I've made some great online friends, including you.:) I trust you had a very happy birthday!

just accept it that there's no internet anymore. we can do nothing about it. our life with our friends online does not depend solely on internet alone. you have all the means to communicate to important poeple in your lives even with out internet. we have cellphones to talk to them. and also landline phones. and other more ways to contact to them.

This is true. There are many other ways to communicate, instead of online. It's just that people have become so dependent on it. Thanks for your response, and welcome to myLot.

Wow! Another great discussion Mom!!! I have read through it all and there are a lot of good points brought up here already.... I do miss letter writing but it is so time consuming! However, if I thought about how much time I spend on the computer I might actually have time for writing! LOL I guess if it came down to it I would definitely get addresses and phone numbers then I would have to weigh out the cost of long distance to postage. ~Heavens~

Hi heavenschild, Thanks! Yes letter writing is time consuming, but like you've said, so is spending time online. I'd weigh out the cost too, but would try to use a combination of both. Thanks for sharing, as always.:) Take Care.
