Daughter-in-law....really a daughter?????

Hi guys...i want to know is really daughter-in-law a daughter for in-laws or just a word. I think it depends upon the nature of a person. If a person is having mutual understanding he/she will always keep their daughter-in-law as a daughter otherwise not. But i don't have any good experience. Wht shud we do if our in-laws are worst to worst.
