The weirdest thing just happened to me. I was serving lunch to my daycare children and everything seemed normal. We had cheeseburger macaroni, milk, carrots and beets. Everyone was happily eating their lunch when one of my four year old boys made the strangest comment. He stabbed one of the sliced beets with his fork and said " I love these! They taste like blood!" I stood there with my mouth hanging open! What in the world would make him say that? I wonder if he has been watching too many scary movies at home....What do you think? What would you have said?

most likely he said tastes because it's food. and he associated it with blood because of the reddish color thus it "tastes like blood" at 4 they don't always use the correct syntax for what they intend.

Is it possible that he had a loose tooth & biting the beets was causing it to bleed? I seriously doubt he saw anything like that in a movie.

No loose teeth, he had not taken one bite of anything yet. That is why I thought it was so weird!

LOL. That's really classic. I have a little one just like that. He's 5 years old. He will sometimes say things just to make Mommy go "Whaaa??" haha I wouldn't think too much of it. Kids at that age really love the response they get from adults. They will say the strangest things just to see the look on your face! And I'm guessing that he got just what he wanted by saying that. =P I would have probably asked him, "What makes you think they taste like blood? Have you been eating blood when I'm not looking?" Then, just smile and give him your best silly face. It let's him know that you realize he was joking , and it doesn't give that statement credit by turning it too serious. Even though it was a silly thing to say, it could really set the tone for how he acts with you on other things. If you turn on him when he's being playful (though morbid!) he may stray away from joking with you again. Then you will go from the fun-adult to the serious-adult. Besides that, kids at that age really don't have the ability to be completely morbid unless it's taught. And kids that are taught to be morbid will show signs elsewhere, such as ripping dolls heads off, hurting the other kids, talking about murder, etc. If this was the only thing he's said or done that was really out of line and morbid, I would shrug it off. Watch him for other actions, though, that may signal other things.

Oh, I agree that kids try to shock adults! I am sure his brother put the idea into his head and he just said it to freak me out. lol

He probably was confused, thinking that because the beet color was red, it was the same as blood. How old was he by the way? I think he did not understand that just because things are blood red, they are not blood. I bet when he gets older, he will probably go into one of those children initiations where they give the children a bowl of cold macaroni and think they are worms. It is just his imagination and I do not think he watched too many scary movies, but I bet he has an older brother and or sister who do.

When I was six I said grape juice tasted like blood. It doesn't really, it just has a reddish tint to it. I was pretending. I was raised on horror movies..I say there's no such thing as too much. But he's a boy, if he was pretending he was eating blood-tasting stuff it's more than normal. I would have smiled and said, "Oh, give me a bowl then. They sur be tasty." Whatever it takes to get your kids to eat the veggies, one needs to incourage.

LOL! My four year old just told me the other day that if you eat peas you are eating worm boogies. I laughed so hard that my stomach hurt. She also thinks that if you eat green beans instead of spinach that you will grow tall and become a "Barbie". LOL kids will be kids!!

I'm thinking maybe Mommy or Daddy have been watching the new show "Moonlight" on Friday nights when their little boy isn't quite in bed yet! I have only seen previews but I think it's about vampires. I would have just chuckled and asked him where he got that idea. Children at that age are very creative ut also very honest.

why not take time to ask him what he meant as in does he has a cut in his mouth, if not then have you tasted blood before and other leading questions, people dont want you to be alarmed but be careful and get to know more who knows what might have been happing on your back! why should he love blood in the first instance. We i africa are that careful thats why we dont have terrible cases of some bad things that happen in Europe or US happening to us.

Well, we cant tell. but i guess you could ask the student why did he compared it with blood. For sure he would have a explanation with that. maybe he just heard that from someone, his classmates or the movies that he watches. or he used of sipping his fingers when it has wounds and taste blood and compared it to the food.

How cute your child is, don`t worriy about him, he is still unaware of it, just use what he has learn. Obvious he know the sentence, teste like blood, from some way you didn`t know, like read scary movies, TV, or heard it from some one. Try to teach the right amd wrong, good and bad, black and white things to him.

You have to remember not to take kids this age too literally. He may have had an entirely different meaning than what you think. I am thinking of a couple of possibilities. One is that they are the color of blood, so he may have said that just because he thinks about blood when he sees red. That is not morbid or because of seeing violence on TV, necessarily. It could just be because of getting a scrape, seeing the blood, and then having it on his mind for a while. The other thing is that it could be something he heard someone else say. If it wasn't too long after Halloween, it could have been one of his parents or an older sibling saying that, possibly dressed as a vampire, to either scare him, or to get him to eat them. I know that kind of sounds like I am grasping at straws here, but that is how young children's minds work. When I was teaching preschool, I had a child once who told me a big story about a monster, and his daddy. I can't remember the details, but the story had me a little concerned. Anyway, I mentioned it to his mom, and she told me that his father had worn a mask on Halloween to scare trick or treaters. The child told me this story in December. That's how long kids remember things. I would not make too much of it, unless you start to notice a pattern developing in his play and behavior that centers around blood or violence. Then I would mention it to his parents. It could just be that he has recently learned about vampires or saw a vampire movie, and likes them and is acting things out from it. That is completely normal and nothing to be concerned about.

yeah ``i agree with you . he possibly had watched something like this. children's imagination is widely.

I expect he was getting mixed up with his senses as these are not yet fully developed and he may not be expressing what he actually means-he probably imagined the "red juice splirting out when he poked his fork in" as blood. It is a fact of nature and he is just exploring using what he knows and his imagination.I am sure it is nothing to worry about just kids playing.
