Could You Pass A 10th Grade Algebra Test?

My son asked for some help with his algebra. I said no problem. Okay, problem. I had to dig deep into my brain for this one. I know, I know, it's easier than I thought. Brain freeze! Ready? "The total cost of Sam's lunch was $5.40, not including tax. The cost of the drink was one-third the cost of the sandwich and the cost of the French fries was twice as much as the drink. Find the price of each." Okay, so we eventually got there. How 'bout you?

s = sandwhich s/3 = drink 2s/3 = fries s + s/3 + 2s/3 = 5.40 3s + s + 2s = 5.40 * 3 6s= 16.2 s= 2.70 s/3=.90 2s/3=1.80 Simple

Hehehe, you know the formula. And, I believe, I heard somewhere that men are better mathematicians. Don't get snippy ladies. I guess men analyze or formulize (or something like that) better than us.

Actually my oldest daughter is a walking calculator much like myself. My youngest is also good at manipulating numbers but here memory needs work. As for the formula, you make it up according to the problem. That isn't like the Pythagorean theory or anything like that. Its basic algebra & a softball of a problem at that.

I don't think I could pass that test. I didn't do well in Algebra when I was in the 10th grade, and I've barely used it since then. I think it would be a stretch. I don't even want to attempt the problem you gave as an example because it just seems like too much work! Ok, obviously math is not my favorite subject.

Totally agree with you. It is way too much work. Just reading it made me dizzy. And how much of anything we learned in high school do we actually use in our daily lives. I guess it must have benefited us in some way. That's another good discussion. Thanks, BlueUnicorn for trying, or not--have a wonderful weekend.

Actually, we use algebra all the time in our lives. If you comparison shop, that's algebra. If you balance your checkbook, that's algebra. Tracking any sports team - you guessed it, algebra. It's all over, we just don't alway pay attention to it.

I agree with reiny- to a certain extent. All of this is basic algebra functions, but it is just that- basic. I just don't see the point in questions like the one above. There is not too often that I don't know any of those variables and need to know. I definately have a use for percentages in my daily life and need to know how they work. I'm glad that I have a firm grasp of that. However, I can honestly say I didn't actually have a full understanding until I actually started using some of the math I had learned and played around with it to get the answers I needed to know. Before that I was more on auto-pilot just answering the questions so I could get my grade. Personally I think they should use more real life questions in math, and it would be better for the students. Using reiny's example- throw the kids a check book register and give them a list of deposits and withdrawls. Include the interest for the month. Have them balance the checkbook. THAT would be math that would serve a purpose, in my opinion.

I would definitely fail! I was never good in math and I only took Pre-Algebra in high school. I barely passed that. My daughter was having problems with algebra so I had to get her a tutor last year. She is now doing much better!

Good call on getting her a tutor. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't do that well with HS algebra these days. Then again, it's all about learning those formulas. Love your avatar, by the way. Just thought I'd throw that in. Very cool.

Hello dear, algebra is so easy for understand!!As you can see all is about sandwich,We can start with cost for lunch 5.40!sandwich is an x,drink is:x/3 and than you have French fries :2x/3!Now put it together! x+x/3+2x/3=5.40/3 now you have : 3x+x+2x=16,20 next 6x=16.20/:6 x=16.20 :6 x=2.70 !When you know the value for x you know price for others things! 1. sandwich=2.70, drink 2.70/3 and French fries 2X2.70/3 Easy!Do you understand now? See you and Regards Silvana

Hi Silvana, hehehe, I'm just learning these formulas all over again. I'm not even sure if I learned them in high school though. And it's quite all right to show us how to do it even though someone else showed us already. It's always interesting to see if everyone gets the same answer. Thanks again.

Well since everyone is doing so well in math I could use a little help myself. So for all you smarty pants out there can someone solve this for me? Use the distributive property to remove the parentheses in the expression. Then simplify by combining like terms. 7(4w-3)-25w Good luck people lets see who gets this one right.

This is what I got: 7(4w-3) = (7 X 4w) - (7 X 3) = 28w - 21 So 28w - 21 - 25w removes the parenthesis Combine the w's and you get 3w - 21

I think that's just an old unfair stereotype that men are better at math than women! Math was my best subject and I did very well in it while some of the things women are "expected" to be better at I wasn't as good. We're all different and I think it's all in what interests us. Annie

I don't think that saying men are better at math is an unfair sterotype at all. It is a proven fact that men are GENERALLY better at some things and women are GENERALLY better at other things. That doesn't make us sexist to say that. Of course there are going to be exceptions to the general data, but there are certain things that we natural lean to.

OH MY GOSH!!! I did it. I'll have to go back and read some of the other answers, but I love this kind of stuff - and did great in algebra. But, I will tell you that if it hadn't been for helping my kids with their homework I would have had to take a beginners algebra when I went back to college!! OK, here's how I got it. Drink = Sandwich/3 Fries = Drink X 2 (which is really Sandwich/3 X 2, which is Sandwich2/3) So, 5.40 = Sandwich + Drink + Fries Which is Sandwich + Sandwich/3 + Sandwich2/3 Now, add the Sandwich/3 and Sandwich2/3 (like denominator? or maybe numerator, I can't remember, but it's the bottom number) and you get Sandwich3/3, which is Sandwich (if numerator and denominator are the same it's 1) So, now we have 5.40 = Sandwich + Sandwich Or 5.40 = 2Sandwich So, 5.40/2 = Sandwich 2.70 = Sandwich 2.70/3 = Drink or .90 .90 X 2 = Fries or 1.80 2.70 + .90 + 1.80 = 5.40 Thanks for waking up the brain a bit!!!

I love Algebra! This is very great question. Okay, here we go... Values: s = sandwich d = drink ff= french fries Sam's lunch -- s + d + ff = 5.40 Sam's drink -- d = 1/3s Sam's french fries -- ff = 2d s + d + ff = 5.40 s + 1/3s + 2d = 5.40 s + 1/3s + 2*1/3s = 5.40 s + 1/3s + 2/3s = 5.40 6/3 s = 5.40 2s = 5.40 Therefore: s = 2.70 d = 1/3s -- d = 1/3*2.70 = 0.90 ff = 2d -- ff = 2*0.90 = 1.80

I was very bad at Algebra. I barely made it through Grade nine let alone Grade 10. That I had to switch from the Academic to the Business program because my father used my higher educational money did not help any. I did get a Math made Easy Book but some of the examples were so hard that to this day I have nightmares about trying vainly to solve problems.

Cost of the Meal $5.40. Dividing the price of the Sand witch into 3 parts. So it would cost the amount of 3 Drinks. Fries cost the amount of 2 Drinks. So in total the meal cost the amount of 6 Drinks which means the Cost of 1 Drink is $5.40 / 6 = $0.90 or 90 Cents. Cost of Fries is $0.90 x 2 = $1.80. Cost of Sand Witch $0.90 x 3 = $2.70. Hope I get it right =) (I Didn't Refer to Previous Reply when doing it)

oh..I just loved that kind of questions..!! You just have to make one of them equals to 'x'..!! like... let the cost of sandwich = x so cost of drink = 1/3x and cost of french fries = 2/3x we get: x + 1/3x + 2/3x = 5.40 It will give a quadratic equation and you can find the value of x and then the values of each product..!! Algebra was never a big deal for me...the thing that bothered me was trignometry..!! The pathetic part of mathematics..!! In trignometry you have to picturise all the graphical diagrams, all the values of degrees...uuhhhh pathetic!! I always failed to memorise them!! I still find a little bit problem in trignometry. :)

Not only do the various States in Australia vary a lot, but I discovered that various high schools in the one city (adelaide in my case) vary a lot too. Yes, in our State year 8 is the beginning of high school. Now in primary school it varies as to how much schooling kids do before they start high school. My daughter did the min. My two step kids did the max. As my daughter & step son are almost the same age, I can see the differences. My daughter does a lot of high level, high thinking work. They are strict & it is not easy to get an A. My step sons school do a lot of easy, superficial work, & you only have to c0omplete assignments & have it looking nice to get an A. I think the latter is c... actually.

Hi Jenny . . . yep the US and Australia have very different grade levels. My son is doing this algebra simply because he hasn't taken the class before. For instance, he opted not to take a science class this year which means he has to do it for the next two years. This also means there might be some juniors and seniors mixed in with sophomores in the same class. Remember 8th grade is not highschool here yet. Last I remember it was in Australia. Plus Australian kids don't get a choice of classes/subjects to take, right? They take a complete course or something like that. Here you do need a certain amount of credits to graduate, but they have things like SATs, SCAT (I think) and an exit exam. Without those they don't get out. I don't remember Aussie having anything like that. I was in the 10th grade in Qld when we migrated to the US and guess what? They transferred my grades from Pine Rivers High and told me I had enough to graduate and placed me as a sophomore in college. Go figure.

Haha I had a tough time with algebra too. That's why I didn't become an accountant. LOL I think most people hate math. It's rare to find someone whose favorite subject is math. As for the problem, if I gather enough mental power I might be able to solve it in a couple of days. Right now my brain is not up to the challenge. Haha

I have forgotten how hard algebra was. Well, this is what I did: Lunch = sandwich + drinks + fries x + y + z = 5.40 we also know that y = x/3 (The cost of the drink was one-third the cost of the sandwich) and z = 2y (the cost of the French fries was twice as much as the drink) Therefore we must make them common: x + x/3 + 2x/3 (z = 2y and y = x/3) We then use the common denominator = 3 to get the formula for lunch) so lunch is 3x + x + 2x = 5.40 Now we need to get the value of x and that is 6x = 5.40. Therefore x = 0.90 Now plug in the value of x into our lunch formula 3(0.90) + (0.90) + (2(0.90) = 5.40 So we will get, sandwich = 3(0.90) = 2.70 drinks = 0.90 fries = 2(0.90) = 1.80 Total lunch = 5.40 Did I do it right?

I had Pre-Algebra in 6th grade. I practically failed. I had Algebra in 8th grade. I barely passed. In 10th grade I was on Algebra 2 and admittingly I only passed because my teacher loved me. So... in short, NO. Because once they put letters in math, I got stupid.
