the more and more i listen to acoustic versions of songs the more i get the inspiration to learn to play guitar. just a few questions.
1) what would be a solid yet afforable starter guitar (not trying to spend a ton of money on something i have no clue how to play yet)
2) is it difficult to learn and any other recommendations you may have

Hey there, well, it's awesome that these songs inspire you, as I for one know that inspiration is the first step towards doing anything.
I think i might be able to help you in this matter. I just started playing the guitar back in August.
Now first things first, get a good guitar, i mean of course an affordable one but something that sounds good. Because if you just get a cheap no brand guitar that sounds like crap, it won't sound so good, and you'll feel like you're not learning at all.
I got a Yamaha f310 acoustic, it cost me only around 100$ which is a great price for a great sounding guitar, it's actually great for beginners too, not exactly a guitar just for beginners, but it's still rated as number 2 in the top ten beginner guitars. It looks great and sounds great too.
So that answers your first question.
About your second, no, it's not difficult, if you have enough inspiration. I don't believe in classes, as till now I have learned on my own. I use the internet as a tool to learn all the basics, and now I can play my favorite songs and have been writing my own songs too.
Here are some websites to get you started.
http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm
This one's free and no signing up or registering, I started learning from this, and highly recommend it. I've gone through all the lessons, and it has helped me a great deal.
After you're done with the above, try some other sites, for music theory or more advanced learning.
http://www.zentao.com/guitar/
http://www.guitarnoise.com/
Now the most important thing for motivation and inspiration is to hear yourself playing your favorite songs, so after you've learned how to read guitar tab, visit this site to learn your favorite songs, it has millions of user submitted guitar tabs.
http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/
another important thing for motivation is to have a friend, physical or online who plays the guitar, that way you'll have someone to talk to and inspire and motivate you.
Here's a few tips I got from my lot users when I first showed interest in playing guitar.
1. your fingers will hurt the first few days, so take it easy, but it will get better as the muscles in your fingers become stronger, and stronger.
2. Never ever wash your hands with cold water after you've played the guitar, this will cause trembling, and is not good.
3. Get a pick, it's cheap and you'll need it.
4. Network with other guitarists if there are any around you.
5. Practice everyday, even if it's just 15 minutes, it will go a long way.
6. Be patient, what seems hard today, will seem like a joke tomorrow.
7. Think of how cool you'll look once you'v learned some cool guitar leads and riffs, that will keep you going.
8. Remember, the guitar is the most versatile instrument around.
9. As a first song to learn, "wild thing" by the troggs is very easy and uses only three chords, so it would be wise to choose it as your first song.
10. When learning songs, choose songs that you already know and love, this makes it easier, even if the song is hard.
So then, good luck. Hope I helped.

javmagik, the best deal I have found, that I have used, is that Hohner makes a neat 3/4 size guitar, that is really inexpensive, and it is really good for the low price you pay for it! The only place I have seen them at is musiciansfriend.com! They have others but this one I have used myself! Others I have used are Epiphone, Ibanez, and they are pretty low priced also

hello dear friend, I love playing the guitar too,but for most time I just play wooden guitar. I have spent more than four years learning how to play it well. It is a long time practice. At the beginning it often hurted my fingurs and many times I even wanted to give it up. But I love it so mcuh , so I held on. And now I can play more easily. Whenever I feel sad or not happy, I come to my old guitar(I bought it five years ago, haha) and just sang some songs then I would feel better.
peter, paul&mary. Have you ever heard of this group? There songs are so beautiful.Especially the song named"monday morning" which I listen again and again..I suggest you have a listening someday.
Also, I love acoustic versions of songs. That is so cool. The solo in them alway makes me excited. But I have no time to learn playing the solid-guitar because of my study.
In my opinion, if you have learned wooden-guitar before,it is not so difficult to learn solid. If not, you may have a hard work. But just try ,practice more, don't give up and you will succeed.
If you don't want to spend much to buy a guitar , I suggest you try "Fender". haha, that not so expensive..
Hope you will be ok with it.
Have a great day ^_^
