Latest processors and motherboard nowadays are dual core from intel. Intel is the company who produces not computer related parts but also other electronic designs for cameras and cellphones.
The hyperthreading technology, or the one using dual core for gaming purposes which was out in the market for more than a year now. Look for a processor that is an intel pentium D (dual core), they have high performance.
A motherboard that is cheap, but of quality since it is also made by intel is asrock. When choosing a motherboard, see to it the it is compatible with your processors, the latest processors are pinless nowadays.
You can choose a sound and video card that are cheap too depending on your usage. As you said, you do not play that much, I recommend the Powercolor ATI Radeon, 128mb will do for your video. A built in sound card is fine with me too, all you need is a software to refine your sound system later.
Actually there are a lot of ways to choose from the variety of products in the market today. Just be smart in comparing each product's performance and read what others have experience. Personally I love desktop since it is very flexible for upgrades. But today's technology is also into the wireless HSDPA or high speed direct protocol access where in the speed is several times that of today's DSL broadband technology for wired. That is why iMac are out in the market and very salable today.
May you prefer a desktop or laptop or a Mac, refer to www.villman.com or go directly to their promo pages at http://www.villman.com/promos/ for more valuable and reasonable prices. Don't get me wrong, am not one of their agent or staff or stockholder, not even the owner. LOL.
