How to set up a web site

hi
do you know how to actually start a website....i mean a real website.
i know you guys and gals will ask me to go for a web host to do that.
I am asking you the steps we need to take to set up a real applicative and useful website( like myspace etc.) without going to a web host.
I have zero knowledge in this..please explain

well.. the very first, and practically the most important is for you to learn the basics of HTML. there are tons of sites which provide tutorials and samples for HTML. it'll be useless for you to learn scripting if you don't know HTML. when you're pretty comfortable with HTML, then proceed to learning scripting (JavaScript, PHP, CSS).
lemme give you a short sample..
i'll just use an image just to make sure it doesn't disrupt this page.

NOTE:
i prefer Notepad so i'll use it as a sample.
type what you see in the image
save the file as webpage.html
and there.. you have your first webpage. c",)

Thank youuuuuu so much for guiding me in this matter.
I have another doubt.
If i want to buy my own web server......do you have any idea about this..like cost of server....running the server.....etc

web server? you must be referring to web hosting. rates differ with each host. prices range from around $10/year to $10/month. this rates usually include Domain registration and Web Hosting. this will be your subscription, which means, whatever you do next is up to you. c",)

but hey, if you're still learning, i suggest you play with free hosting sites first like geocities.com or freewebs.com. it should give you heads-up experience of where you're going. c',)

well a website has a big role to play. and specially if it is for a company then i think you can say that the website represents the company on the web. and so it is very important to first get the basic idea as in what the company focuses on and what is so special about the company and these are things which should be prominent things in the main page of the website. you have to understand the people and their tendency to make a good website. this is what i do. so if you need more help you can contact me through my website http://www.pixelgroups.com
