Yes, I have experienced moments like this. If I am sad and crying my dog will want to be right next to me, as if he is trying to make me feel better. If I am sick with a cold, he will also lay around and "act" sick. He imitates my emotions all the time.

Yes, I see this kind of behaviour in my dog and cats all the time. For the most part, they are independent animals, meaning they're not begging for attention constantly. But when I'm happy, it seems like they are into sharing the joy, and almost look like they're smiling. And when I'm sick, they will constantly lie by me and will not leave my side. They also act depressed when I'm sick. One time I had a whole year of cancer treatments, they never left my side, and their natural demeanor changed on their faces to one of a 'mothering' nature. Now, when I leave the house for an afternoon, they all come and greet me at the door, and they're so happy to see me that it takes at least 5 minutes to get past them into the room...and yes, it appears that they are smiling. (Other relatives at the house say the animals all act severely depressed when I leave, and have sad eyes. They wait by the door until I come home, and then even they notice the difference in the animals faces and eyes.) I think dogs and cats have deeper feelings and emotions than we humans give them credit for!
