the other month, on the way to work, i was traveling on a 2 lane highway, with the speed limit set at 40 mph. a guy in a pickup truck was ahead of me driving around 30 mph. when i got to the passing marks on the highway, i began to pass him. well, da ya know that guy sped up to almost 65 mph, so i couldn't get back into the lane as i was attempting to pass him! needless to say, i could see a car coming towards me in the oncoming lane!!so i ended up going about 73 mph just to get past this character and back into my lane before i got hit headon by the oncoming care. why do people do this when your trying to pass them?? is it an ego thing...no one can pass them???.....stamzi

Hi stanzi2007! I have seen those kind of drivers and I really don't understand what they are trying to prove if they wouldn't let you go ahead before them when all the while they are driving a little slow than you are. I really don't understand why they have to risk your safety by not allowing you to pass. Are they insulted because you are driving past them and they want to prove to you that their vehicle or their car is much faster than yours? Gosh, I think so for their bain has been damaged by their ego. Take care and have a nice day. :)

I am sorry to hear that you got hit. That is terrible what that driver did to you. I experience that a lot as well here and wonder why people do that. Road rage is out of control. I hope that you were not hurt when you got hit. There are some very mean people out there who do not belong on the road. As soon as I try to change lanes, cars will speed up and not allow me to get in. It is very annoying.

This has happened to me in a 50 mph zone when another driver was going 30, I passed them in a truck lane and they sped up to the speed limit. I couldn't slow down to get behind them because there were 2 other cars following me. It is almost as if they own the road and nobody is allowed to drive in front of them.

If the passing car has done nothing wrong, I would be courteous and let him pass. If I notice that he is reckless, discourteous or just trying to show off, I would do the same thing that was done to you. Haha scare the sh_t out of him. Why? To teach him a lesson.

And what would that lesson be? That you're an ahole? Slower moving traffic is to yield to faster traffic - period. No deciding if they are showing off, being wreckless, and for the discourteous thing...you'd only being showing that not only are you discourteous by driving 10 under the limit and refusing to yield, but that your ego requires you to up the ante to be THE most discourteous driver of the two. Even if you are going the posted limit, if someone wants/tries to pass you, the mature, responsible thing to do is let them. For all you know, that really is Mario Andretti (or some other, way-more-experienced-than-you'll-ever-be professional driver) behind you.

Its not only that.. all sorts of BS run on the highways, and we all contribute to it. Problem is that on the roads we feel protected by our cars, like isolated from the other people.. its psychological, we know how we drive, and we consider that to be safe, so we just blame others when they do things we feel stupid or dangerous because they dont are right for our point of view. i'm sorry for my bad english, what i'm trying to say is that the street is that place were we actually meet other drivers doing things just as dangerous as ours, yet we always have an excuse for our own "gambles", but not for others. About your own example i'd say that it is part an ego thing, part frustration that translates in bad acting between unknown people.

Some people..especially men..(sorry men) think revving up the car and hogging the road is a macho thing.. Men like control and the car is one way they can satisfy their need for this..It's terrible what that fellow did and it makes you wonder how he would have felt if you head on collisions turned out to be fatal. I run into such kinds of people allthe time..especially on rt 35 where truckers get some kind of thrill off honking their horns and owning the road

I try to avoid these people as much as I can. I do not want to give them any kind of reaction to feed into and make things worse not only putting my own safety at jeopardy but other drivers on the road as well. I would rather make it to my destination safely in the long run.

Maybe I am misunderstanding something here. Could you say again just why it was that you could not simply slow down, and let the idiot go fast and get out of your way? Was there another car tailgating you when you attempted this maneuver? If you had gotten a speeding ticket that would have been quite expensive and probably made your insurance go up very high. Clearly the officer would have said that going 30 mph in a 40 mph zone is not against the law, but going 73 certainly was. You must have been late to work already when you started out and trying to make up the lost time. Well, I am glad you did not get hurt in an accident and also that you did not get arrested. It is too bad the truck driver did not get arrested, though, because that might have made you feel better, eh?

dear drannhh, it was already TOO late to abort the pass! i was neck in neck with him, and i had to smoke him just to get ahead of him back in my lane so as not to get hit by the car in the oncoming lane!...stanzi
