How do you decorate your Christmas tree?

I know a lot of people like to decorate them with one major color like blue or gold. It seems to be the new trend in high fashion. as for me I like the multi colored lights and all kinds of different ornaments. Some I have made, some were my mothers, some I have collected over the years. I don't really get the holiday spirit when I see lights of all one color strung on homes but when I see one with reds and greens and yellows and blues I get the spirit. I guess I am really old fashion but to me red and green mean Christmas. How do you like to decorate your tree?

We have a pre-lit fake tree, so it just has white lights on it. Then we decorate it with all different ornaments. My mom got us a new ornament each year so I have all the ornaments from my childhood and my husband has a few his mom got him. And now we are starting a collection for our kids so we put them up too.

Again, I am overwhelmed by the number of responses to this discussion and since I don't have a lot of extra time due to spending some with my son before he leaves I am going to have to do a group hug. I am rating everyone a+ and want to thank each and every one of you for the great responses. Hugs.

We have fake tree and I sometimes manage to decorate it alone in my room, because I love when I wake up in the morning and the first thing that I see remindes me of holidays. That is just great feeling. I decorate it with ornaments I find in shops and some home made by my sister and it looks really nice. I also put some lights in my room, but I try to make new styles every year.

Since my son got married and has his own tree I don't do a realone anymore. But I shall get back to that habit when in future years I hope I'll have any grandchildren here for Christmas. I 'make do' with a tiny artificial one now as I'm away from mine for most of Christmas and it does seem such a waste. You can't beat the smellof a realone though and all that tinsel and the lights just as yuo describe them. I know I shouldn't wish time away but I will be glad to get back into that habit again.

I decorate my tree with just White Lights and classic looking bulbs. It's simple but pretty. The shape of the tree is the most important detail though for me.

For the past few years we have been decorating out tree in Americana, red white and blue. We have been collecting the ornaments over the years, and it matches the theme in my living room where the tree will be. We also add the decortions that my daughter have gotten over the years and some from my and my husbands childhood.

Christmas Tree 2007 - This is our Christmas Tree for this year.
I made it all Blue with Silver & didn't go over the top with decorations, it just looks nice without being too done!
This year we've just gone with blue & silver on the tree, my Mum keeps changing her tree's colour scheme so i got heaps of her ornaments. I went with the blue & silver because that was the main colours i had everything in. I have silver tinsel on there & the fibre-optic angel on top is mainly silver so we just went with that. The lights are multi-coloured though, i love a tree with different coloured lights! The angle on top changes colours too so it all looks great! Everything matches! Usually though, i have all different coloured everything on the tree, i just thought this year i might go with a colour scheme & see how i like it, next year i might try a different colour scheme - just to change things up a little bit!

Hey, we have much in common as far as Christmas trees are concerned. I haven't put up my tree yet (will do so this week) but it will have multi-colored chasing lights. My tree is green, and will have different types of ornaments in gold, red, silver and green, all these colors which symbolize Christmas. Some ornaments were made by my wife. Last year, my tree had yellow lights, but recently on holiday, I bought a string of 200 multi-colored lights, just for a change. When my tree is up, I may post a picture here for you to see.

I like to match it somehow, but you are right i need to have red color there too. I don't know how I am gonna decorate christmas tree this year, since I have never really been away from home. I will have to buy decorations. But in my mum's home, we would always have at least two lights and then little bells one big one, also in europe what i have seen many people go back to natural decorations and tehy are using decorations from straws and apples and sell from nuts, dry lemon and ornage. It looks maybe simple, but it is nice.

before, we used to decorate our christmas tree with the traditional combination of red and green colored decors and lights. Now, we try to experiment on other colors as well. In malls you can buy decors in literally all colors even in black. The malls here really provide a big space just for christmas tree displays complete with decorations and lights. Each tree usually has a theme of one color only. It's really a feast to the eyes. You may get ideas from there or you buy the whole tree with decors, lights and all. It's your choice depending on your budget.

I let my daughter pick out all the different ornaments. Every year we go to the hallmark shop and I would let her buy two new ones. We also go to the after xmas sales and we would pick out a few then too. When my husband get the tree ready for us to decorate, my daughter jumps to it. The tree lights up in different colors so the ornaments are all in different colors and themes. I just love how her eyes pop open after we finish decorating the tree and plug in the lights.

Like you, I am eclectic. My decor means something to me, if no one else. I have made things, and purchased special things, and I like multi colored lights. I do buy strings of one color or another to run down the hallway year round, as a nightlight trail to the bathroom. I have an ornament that I received from a little girl twenty seven or eight years ago, when I taught her in church. She and her mom made it out of a tuna can. I have lots of stars. I read about a custom in Finland where they hang a canopy, filled with straw and dangle stars from it. My husband's heritage is from Finland, so I adopted the star theme, and have lots of them. I even strung star shaped large sequins in strings on fishing line, they look great! I put little tacks on a one by two and hung it across a large doorway, it has all of my stars hanging from it. I like to use snowman decor, cause you can leave it up a long time and not be out of place, so I have a few of them too. I would like to put a forest of artificial trees on my front porch this year.

I like to do colors that match. Last year was the first time that I had a real tree with my family. I did purple and silver. It was pretty. Now my mom always doe multi colors. She has thing collected over the years from the kids and none of them match so she just puts anything all over it. This year, I have hand me down ornaments. Some are red and some are gold. It is one of those that the ends of the pine stems light up. I forget what they are called. I was trying to put lights on it but I had a little problem. I tested the lights in the outlet to see if they were working right. Well, they did not light up. So I looked down the line of lights and I see that one of the lights had busted, but still had the little wires inside. I go to bite it so I could pull the broke light out of there. Well, I forgot that it was still plugged up because none of the lights were lit on the strand. It shoked me bad. My tounge touched the wires. I am thankful that I am alright, I just got really scared. I still have bumps all over my tounge, I dunno if the bumps are from the shock or not, but they came up later that night after the shock happened.
