Do you give your dog supplements?

We have a 2-year-old cockapoo who is recovering from a ruptured disc in his back. We had to take him to a teaching hospital 90 mins. away to have surgery (which cost $4000!!!) and the whole ordeal has been miserable for us all. The vet and students who treated him said he already has an unusual amount of calcification in his spine and if we're not very careful, this could happen again. He is practically a puppy and they told us he should not run or jump! At all! I'm going to do my best to make sure this never happens again but I'm looking for opinions on supplementation. Do you give your dogs supplements? If so, which ones? Did your vet recommend them or did you seek them out on your own? I just want Kip to live as long and healthy a life as he possibly can. My vet doesn't seem to think that supplements are worth the $$$, but I'm no so sure. I wish there was a good holisitic vet nearby, but the closest one is 30 mins. away and I heard it's hard to get an appointment. There must be more I can do than just restrict all activity!
