With the rapid growth of e-resources and the quality of study materials like books released in the market these days the emphasis has shifted to self study . So how much do you think these factors have influenced the role of a teacher or do you actually think we need a teacher for most of the subjects that we learn at school?

Other than that, I can say that the technology has developed so fast. For example, teachers and professors use SMART BOARD to teach their students.
In my humble opinion, all those factors have influenced the role of a teacher.Well, if we think that teachers are needed for most of the subjects that we learn in school....we have to think from 'teacher readiness','pedagogical goals' and 'resistance to smart teaching'
Teacher readiness = a state of preparedness to teach and impart knowledge.Must be mental, physical and spiritual state of willingness and 'I-Can-Do-It' confidence in classroom.
Pedagogical goals = specific desired learning outcomes from students.Could be skills,knowledge/behavioral outcomes.
Resistance to smart teaching = a rebellious behavior / tendency to not conform to expectations....unwillingness to cooperate to make smart teaching a success.
With all due respect, I feel that three factors (teacher readiness, pedagogical goals and resistance to smart teaching) may cause / trigger each other. It is 'Cause and Effect Relationship, a sequence of events all triggered by a cause....and the rest are the effects.

But all these strategies of teaching are not known to many teachers especially to those belonging to the underdeveloped and some developing countries . Even in some developed countries such talented teachers are not found in large numbers . Teaching is an art which many teachers have not learnt or mastered . In that case we have to think of a way in which the available quality teachers are respected and their services can be used to help other teachers who lag behind in their teaching methods .

i think for some major subjects, i think we still do... i mean we can still learn on our own but sometimes it would mean the long way... (blind leading the blind) but if your current teachers are blind as well, it doesn't make any difference at all.... but if your great professors who really guide you with your studies, that would be fun studying with that professor... they can somehow mold your character :-)

Yes I agree to the fact that there are some really good teachers . But there are some really bad ones as well who actually have a negative impact on students . Isn't it high time that we actually start searching for those really good teachers and treat them as guest teachers(like guest lecturers) and there by the student
has the opportunity to sit for only quality classes given by quality people...

Teachers are always important my dear friend. of course now a days these e-recourses and books help a lot to self study. But a good teacher not only teach you but also help to build the character of a student. They give guidance in life. Teacher has the capacity to find out the talent in a student. So the importance of teachers and professors are ever last.

the teachers r very important now and they were important in the past as well
no one can deny their importance
because the STUDIES r not important the
source i.e (TEACHERS & PROFESSORS ) ARE very much important
because by then we learn the text material and the adequates to progress in life
and when we progress they feel proud at themself that their student is doing well or has achieved some good position

teachers are very important though there are already materials for self studying..but some people still need a teacher to teach them..it is because some things that are in the book net are not sometimes clear for the student to understand. that's why there are teachers to elaborate and exapnd their knowledge...
