Hiccups

Has this ever happened to you? You brush your teeth, put out the light, get all comfy and cosy in bed, then... *hic!* You think (hope?) maybe it's just an isolated incident when... *hic!* there it goes again. You try holding your breath because you don't want to get out of bed, but all that does is slightly quiet it while it happens. You let out your breath and *HIC!* You notice the bed shakes with every spasm. You'll never get to sleep this way, so you get out of your comfy, cosy bed and take your preferred remedy.
Mine is to take an aspirin (asa, not acetaminophen or ibuprofen). My mother had read somewhere, way back in the early 60s, about taking an aspirin to quell hiccups, so we gave it a try the next time I got them, and it worked! Ever since, when I have the hiccups, I take an aspirin and they almost immediately subside. Not so if I just drink some water.
What's your sure-fire cure? (Do you even get the hiccups?)

I have never gotten the hiccups in bed, though my husband has and it is most annoying. I'm not even sure he is aware he has them (sound asleep). It usually happens after he has been drinking. He does nothing about his hiccups as they subside quickly.
My younger daughter can hiccup for half an hour and I insist she take a spoon full of peanut butter. She is not crazy about peanut butter and tries to hold of taking it but it really does work.
I also do the hold your breath and drink-as-much-water-as-fast-as-you-can-without-breathing technique, but it doesn't ALWAYS work and sometimes you have to do it a couple of times for it to be successful. A lot of the times the hiccups return.
I prefer the peanut butter method.

Now theres a good question and I have no answer since I seldom get hiccups. I think there is something in my system that just doesn't do hiccups as well as burps. I never burp either my daughter finds it very strange, but thats the way it is. It has been that way for me as long as I can remember and I don't have a clue why.

This has happened to me numerous times and it is very annoying. I usually have a difficult time getting rid of my hiccups. Sometimes drinking warm milk helps or drinking several glasses of water. I will also try and burp to get it to go away. I have had several sleepless nights because of getting the hiccups just before going to bed. It is also pretty embarrassing getting the hiccups at work and everyone hearing me hiccup. LOL

Yeah, I often get the burps with the hiccups, too. Annoying, isn't it?

I get hiccups too. Sometimes it´s quite embarrassing because i happens while I´m in a shop or some other public place. My remedy is to hold my breath for as long as I can. I have to do it various times though because the first time I only get to 50 and then start "hiccing" again.
It´s unnerving enough to do this at home and impossible in public.
I think I´ll give the aspirin a try. Thanks for the tip.

Reading your entry reminded me of something I read in the paper this weekend. It was a guy asking for advice, as he hasn't stopped hiccuping in 8 years! He has been to the doctor, but apparently they can help him to mitigate them a bit, but not stop them! It must be so uncomfortable! I must remember your aspirins if it ever happens to me!

I hate the hiccups! their so annoying! I always get rid of mine, by drinking a gulp of water at the exact same time a hiccup comes up.

I'd likely breathe in the water if I tried that.
