What's the best way to clean your cross stitch artwork? I have a few pieces that I did years ago and they need to be cleaned. What's the best way to do this and not have any damage?

I've been cross stitching since '91 and have always cleaned mine the same way. When the piece is finished, I wash it in cool water with a touch of Dawn or Ivory dishsoap and then place it (picture side down) on a thick towel and press it with an iron BUT ONLY ON THE BACK. I never iron the front, as it flattens the stitches. Then it gets framed which I do myself as well. If it is going to be finished like a pillow or magnet that is going to be exposed to air all the time, it gets a light spray of Scotch Guard in order to keep dust and air dirt from getting into it. Whenever I finish a cross stitch, to get it cleaned up I hand wash it in a sink with warm water and mild dish soap. Then I rinse it out really good, and lay it face down on a towel and iron until it's dry. It can take a long time to do this but I find it works the best for bringing out the stitching.

I am definitely not an expert, but I'd have to say wash it manually with soft soap for delicate clothes... Unless you had it framed and can't reverse it, ha ha ha My grandma does a lot of stitch art work, I'll find out more about this and let you know. =)

I clean mine with woolite. Or maybe ivory snow..but I go for a gentle soap...always use really cold water..the reds tend to bleed.

Cheesehater's wife gives good advice. I usually use dishsoap.

Oh, and don't wring out. Place between two towels and roll up to squeeze out excess water. Iron from the back, face down on a (dry) towel.

I don't usually have to clean my cross stitch since when I do it I try to keep it clean. After finishing it and I can't frame it. I roll if up and wrap them in plastic so it wont be dusted. If it needs to be wash. I usually iron the front side to prevent color blotting. Then soak it on mild soap. I don't wring cause it crumples the cloth then it with clips to dry in air. But it's much better to make the work as clean as possible. And I don't usually use white Aida's since it tends to easily get dirty. :)
