They Might Be Declining In Quality Over The Years

As quickly as you can say "You're Not The Boss of Me Now?" Which isn't THAT fast, relative to other song titles, but it's not that slow, either. Anyway, I'm not sold on too much that's come after "Factory Showroom." I think they still have it in them (see Linnel's "State Songs,") so why the drop-off? I mention "Boss of Me" because it was the first TMBG song that I actively disliked, and since then, well they're kind of faded-glory as far as I'm concerned. Their early stuff, though-- wowee. It's not just me, is it? Maybe Y2K was real, but it was limited to bringing an end to They Might Be Giants.

Actually, I think their last really great album was Apollo 18. Everything after that seems kinda bland to me, with the exception of Mink Car, which I thought was fun. Though I seem to be in the minority on that one. Everyone's tastes are different I realize, but I generally agree with your observation. Hey, welcome to MyLot!

Well, you know-- I hate to be harsh, or a downer. They Might Be Giants may have nosedived, but it's almost unheard of for a band to please the same fan base throughout their existence, especially if they stay together for decades. If the Beatles were still making music, they'd probably be half-legend half-joke, like the Rolling Stones. With this being said, I'll admit that TMBG is a leg ahead of bands, even as-is. But I'm just curious to know if there is a segment of TMBG fans (younger people, maybe) that actually PREFER the newer stuff the old. So, what I want to know is: Who's making up dorky little corresponding hand gestures for all the lyrics to "The Mesopotamians" these days in order to impress the Johns at live shows? Who's searching for "The Spine" on vinyl? Who's digging all those kid's songs (and possibly having children of their own simply BECAUSE they'll get to teach their kids their alphabet via Linnell and Flansburgh?) Who's buying that new TMBG fleece? Are you out there? Are you? That's all I want to know.
