I can give you my experiences. I had to have a d & c way back in the 70s, and that was before they do it in such a way as to not cut part of the muscles. My sister-in-law had the same problem, and a friend of mine had problems after she gave birth, and had to have an exploratory and she still have a stomach, so it could be that your muscle tone may not be as good because you gave birth, you may have had a caesarion, etc.
So with all this, it maybe harder to get rid of them than before. I would say add walking, lots of walking plus running to your situps, and crunches. Get moving. You have to burn off the fat and I have heard that 45 minutes a day will do it, but I do not know whether that is in one time or can be done in short bits during the day.

This is possible. Sometimes, because your stomach was previously all fat, it is now gaining pure muscle mass. Sometimes, this muscle is bigger than the fat originally was. I guess this depends on the size of the stomach, but yeah.
Also... if you have a lot of fast on your stomach, then just doing sit-ups will not be enough. There is a layer of fat between the skin and the abdominal muscles that will not be affected by sit-ups. To burn this away, you will have to do actual fat burning exercises instead of muscle toning exercises. Things like jogging or other cardiovascular activities should help you trim down this fat, along with the continuation of the sit-ups.
