Star ratings?

United States

I've recently crossed the 100 post threshhold to discover I instantly had a star rating of 9. I guessed I POed a few people so I think my posts must have been thought provoking to someone. I really don't want a super low rating but are the 10 rating people really contributing? I feel kind of proud that my rating didn't start off at 10 :)

I thought that the higher the numbers the better. I think 1 is bad and 10 is good. I'm not sure though. Can someone shed some light on this? If this is indeed the case then you've gotten off to a amasing start! I usually give as many people as possible stars.

Yes, 10 is the best and it goes down from there. But my point is, if you have a 10 then you're making everyone happy. If you're making everyone happy, are you causing anyone to think? It's not that I want my rating 0 or 1 but I really don't want it to be 10 either. I want to make people pissed off at times! I want them to challenge me and defend their own positions, I want them to think and not simply react.

I see where you are coming from and I agree to some extent. I think that a lot of people here give +'s for good responses even if they disagree with them. I do, unless the person is bashing someone elses beliefs. There is a respectful way of expressing your opinion without putting others down. I give most people +

I give + ratings the vast majority of time as well. I tend to shy away from commenting on any discussions where I would feel the need to mark negative or report it. I'ld guess I rate about 3/4 of discussions and replies + then leave most of the remaining unrated. On a few occasions I felt a response really detracted from the discussion so badly I had to rate it -. I have yet to report any abuses of the site tho I've seen many because I tend to sift through the no responses and new users sections.

Congratulations for reaching your 100th post. I think a 9 star is a wonderful start. I wasn't so fortunate to start off with a 9. I believe my first star was a 6. I do tend to avoid certain topics, but from time to time I will voice my opinion on matters that are important to me. That's just the way I am, whether it's online or off. I also try by best to not offend anyone and write tactfully even when it is a heated topic. I certainly don't see it helping my rating if I were to get all nasty and mean. Plus I'm not the type to get all nasty on here anyway. :P Again congratulations! :)

Thanks. Maybe some people take your sarcasm the wrong way and this is why your rating is a 9 rather than a 10. Sadly, the "-" can be abused too easily.

Congratulations on you 9 star rating... that is pretty high for a young mylot member... i started out with 8 and my rating would dance around 9 and 10... Most of mylot members in my friends list who have a 10 star rating are quite a pro... in term of starting discussions and giving responses... they are the ones who give a lot of thought in what they are writing so i admire them very much... Just do what you are doing and in no time you will get you 10 star rating... Kudos to Mylot!
