What makes you buy a particular video game?

I'm always conscience of the reviews certain people give for a video game before I actually put my money on it. I go to various sources like gamespot and IGN and check out their ratings and what the users had to say.
Recently I really wanted to get a certain game, but after I found out that the reviews weren't impressive I just let it go. Reviews are the main thing holding me back and a certain video game.
So, what do you guys look for before buying a game? do you just go for it or consult others?

Well, for me I go by reputation of the game if I am familiar with it. For instance, the Zelda game Twilight Princess I wanted to get that because I was a Zelda fan and thought it would be interested to play it. I don't regret that as I feel that was a good move. I also if possible try out a demo of the game to see if I would buy it or not. I used to do that when I got the PlayStation Magazines and actually it worked out well. I probably go for it and see if it would be something I would want to play based off reputation and trailers. I could read a lot about a game but I have to visually see it myself.

Well that's true. It can be a problem and can be misleading. Maybe borrowing from Blockbuster or something like that. I used to do that when I was a kid and rented NES games. That's how I've done it and for the most part, it's not been too bad.

The trailers. Sometimes the game trailers somehow influences me to buy the game. They always show the good side of the game. But I read reviews before I buy the video game. Yes, I agree that sometimes a game is not impressive as we thought it was. Game reviews gives us all detailed information about the game like the quality of graphics and of the sound. I sometimes regret buying a particular video game that I didn't enjoy so I suggest you read reviews first too.

For me it's the story of the game. The gist of the story is what makes me hooked to a specific game. The trailers usually give out the gist of the story. Also, the gameplay is what makes me buy a particular game. If I like the how the game is played then I would certainly buy it. Genre comes to a close third.

when friends influence me to buy one. specially if they know that my son is going to enjoy it too. some of the video games has ratings on magazines and they also put the story too (and sometimes even the cheats lol). i do play video games (mostly my son does) i buy something for myself when i know the story. for example ice age 2. i bought it for myself and finish it.

I look for cute characters/design, good ratings, and a long storyline.

This is a very good discussion because video games are very important because they are a good way to relax when you are stressed out and everyone gets stressed out because stress is unavoidable especially playing games such as Halo or Halo 3 because I have always noticed that nothing helps get out frustration better than slaughtering aliens that are trying to take over the Earth if you know what I mean, and video games are also a good way to pass the time when you are either very bored,or you have nothing to do,or it is snowing outside,or raining outside,or it is a day you just do not want to leave the house, and they are also a very good source of entertainment if you ask me,and I am sure there are a lot of people out there who have a certain thing that makes them want to buy a certain video game either because they like a series,or they like the way the box looks,or they like company that made the game, and want to give it a try,and then I am sure there are people who either do not like video games because they think they are trash, even though they should not judge them if they have never played one, play them only from time to time,or do not have a certain type of game that they like to buy and just but whatever is on sale,or just pick up random games and give them a try,and I can understand both sides because there are so many games out there it is hard to know which ones to choose, and that is cool that you buy video games based on peoples reviews, even though not everyone is going to like every game because some people have different tastes, and sometimes you have to go out on a limbI have always been a big gamer, and video games have always been one of my favorite hobbies, and when I was a kid,if I was not sleeping,on the computer,in school,or watching television,I was playing video games, and usually when it comes to buying video games I go by the way it looks, and if it looks like my type of game then I will try it because I am not very picky and I especially love war games, and stealth gamesI think my favorite would be the Splinter Cell series which I could play over and over without getting tired of it because you play as CIA agent Sam Fisher who gets to use stealth to take out terrorists that are trying to take over the world, and part of the reason I wanted the X-box 360 is because Splinter Cell Conviction is coming out for the 360 at the beginning of next year, and I want to get it so I can finish mine and my fiances collection of Splinter Cell games, and I want to see if it is as good as Splinter Cell Double Agent which was the fourth game in the series, and when I first played the first Splinter Cell game I just bought it on a Whim and loved it,I also like Halo, and Halo 3 which is the other reason I wanted an X-box 360 because I heard a lot of good things about Halo3 and it is an awesome game, and the first time I tried Halo was because I heard so many things about it and my brother bought it when he had an X-box and he loved it so we tried co-op which was out of site, and I now I have all three Halo games in the series and right now I am playing another game I really like which is Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time on the Nintendo 64,which I have been in the mood to play, and I remember when I first played it because it seemed interesting and I was glad I did, even though there has been games that looked good, but ended up not being my type of game, even though nothing ventured nothing gained, and I do not regret trying new games, because it is good to try new things every once in a while.
