As a published author and counselor in the spiritual arts of using transpersonalism in ones life, I find being told 'how to write' a novel or anything for that matter isn't enough if writing, creatively expressing oneself through words, is anything but taught. It is innate, born within the very many scattered souls across the globe who can take to pen and paper like its second nature for them--very little thought involved on 'how to' it just becomes an 'is'.
Learn the English language better than you have learned anything in your life, have a notebook with you at all times so when thoughts on something come to you, it can be written down OR carry a voice recording device and speak your stories into the microphone, tape it and later transfer it to your computer.
A writer passionate in her or his work never leaves without a means to 'always be writing stories' if travelling, eating, watching tv. reading, --a notepad is always with them.
My passion runs deep for writing quality material on various subjects and novel writing, well I have a novella (shorter than novel equally difficult to oragnize, easy to write) in my literary agent's home right now and several short stories and poetry she will be evaluating.
My agent found me since I have created an online publishing following (a literary resume) for the last three years writing fiction and non-fiction pieces for various amounts of money. Nothing extremely lucrative but the residual income, constant flow of money as viewers read, rate, and comment my works is very rewarding.
Becoming a writer from scratch is not impossible but does involve challenge when stuck looking for material. Just let it flow, the ideas will find you and you will create them into beautiful sound prose !
Much success to you and I hope I have helped . . .
