selfishness..self preservation..survival..or vice

Do you think some acts of selfihsness or selfish behavior stem from some peoples instincts of self preservation..survival ...looking out for number one...and if they dont control it ..they turn into a vice..
while other people are naturally nice ..or have lower survival streak and hence less selfish..or..just a personality thing or what.do you think?
