My older son's school has a toddler group for kids aged 1.5 years. I was wondering if it really is worth sending a child to a toddler's group? What do they do there? My older son didn't start school till he was 3 and we were totally fine with it. The school has offered me a job too and I am considering working if I can put my younger child in the toddler's group. It's not like I need the money. So, if I feel that my son's going to gain more by staying at home longer, then I will not take up the job. Btw...the toddler's group is only for 2 hours a day. So, what do you think? Is a child going to gain anything by going to a toddler's group at 1.5 years of age?

One and half years' child is too young I feel to join any toddler group. Let him be atleast 2 years, before he goes to any toddler group in a school. If you join in the same school, then you can look after him.

Your presence with him will help him feel secure in the toddlers' group. Hopefully, you have offered job in the same school.

Yes, I have been offered the job in the same school. lol..and my son is ready to leave me already! He's very comfortable with people and other kids (which was not the case till 2 months back). He is also more or less potty trained and I'm confident will be totally potty trained by 1.5. Family is my priority and I would never take up a job where I have to be away from my kids for any amount of time. Even with the older one, I used to be back home before he got back from school. So, no compromise on that front. I was wondering what they do in a toddler group. I've heard of a toddler-parent program...but this is the first time I am hearing of a toddler group alone. I know my son might not really have a problem being there for 2 hours, but I don't think kids that age (especially a group) is something an adult can manage. Thanks for the response!

If you feel that he is potty trained and can manage the things himself...then you can give it a try...moreover if you are also with him...if will give him some kind of confidence and help him to do better in the group. No harm in giving it a try.

Dear Friend to me 3 or 3 and half years is best age for kid to join school. 1.5 yrs is too young to toddler group, i think it would be more day care rather then school. i also believe they need atleast few years to their own, and i am sure mother or father at home can start orientation. Take care

I'm not sure what they do in the toddler group. It is definitely not day care. My older son goes to the same school and I am happy with the school. Orientation will not be a problem and my son is mingling already and potty training has also started (which has been successful so far). Maybe I am plain lucky to get 2 boys who have been quick to master the social skills needed for toddlers (I don't want to take credit because I have seen how tough it has been for some of my friends). Anyways, I have 7 more months to consider and make a decision. Thanks for the response!

Hi friend, i am sure the school which is starting toddler group must be very good as to start toddler group is not easy, it goes with lot of responsibilty and management. so best way is to find out the activities they are planning for toddler group and then decide but still i will not send my kids to school b4 they are 3. hey u r lucky that u have boys and they sound quite good, i have boy, is just 26 months and he is really with mercury in his vein rather then blood, lol take care, and take ur time as i believe mom is best to decide about her kids c ya

My second one is quite and active and faster to do stuff than my older one. Anyways, he will be joining the toddler group only if I am convinced that he will gain something from it AND I get a job at the same campus. Or else we stay home for another year.

My daugher has been to a toddler group and i feel that this surely helps in the developement of the child. She made friends and had a good interview during the time of admission as she had become a part of the school culture. Moreover this helped in making her time spent in useful activites that just staying at home. The only thing which i find different is the age factor. I think she was around quarter to two years when she begun the group. 1.5 years seems to be too young.

My older son didn't start school till he was 3 and inspite of not interacting with other children, he was fine. I'm just considering the option because I got a job offer there. Or else I prefer him being home a little more. Thanks for the response.

i think the toddler group is all about interaction with the kids.but then he,i mean, your little one has a elder one to interact with, then whats the point in sending to toddler group.

My older one is 6 years older than his brother...so the interaction is on another level. But he does have other kids his age as neighbours. So, interaction, frankly, is not my problem. Since I've got a job offer at the same place and it's only 2 hours in a day, I thought I will CONSIDER. I am still thinking about my options. I still have 7 months before I decide. He is only one year old now (the day after tomorrow is his first birthday)...so I have lots of time to think about the pros and cons...wanted suggestions that would help me decide. Thanks for the response:)

Hi SViswan, Well Im not a parent, but I think it would be really good for your toddler to interact and get used to playing with other kids. I think it would prepare the child to start school. It would also prepare them for the type of attention they would get, since they might be used to being one on one with their parent/s. Its hard for teachers to give students one on one attention at all times. Where I live you cant really put your child in any type of program like that, unless they are 4. So thats really nice that you have something that they can attend at such an early age. I think you should do it, and it will allow you some time to work and get out and interact as well. Its just as important to interact with poeple as an adult. Best of luck in what you decide! Bay Lay Gray xx

Yes, I have talked to them over the phone and they have asked me to come in on Monday and see how things are done there. I like the transparency...and since I'm also considering working there, I thought it would be a good idea to see how things happen there. Thanks for the response and have a great day.

My older son didn't start school till he was 3. Now with the two of them, I find that I cannot spend the same time with the younger one as I did with the older one. And the job offer has come up at the same school...so it's not like I will be away from home when he gets back. We will be going and coming together. Even when the kids are at home, it's not a parent one-to-one all the time. They do get time to interact with other kids at the apartment complex..and both my kids have been raised to be independant. I don't believe in too much molly coddling. I just wanted to know about what they really do with kids that age for 2 hours? Are there group activities that they will be involved with? In 2 hours (with potty training and snack time thrown in), what's the maximum that one can do? Thanks for your post! You are right about the interaction with other kids:)

I would imagine they would do some sort of training in those 2 hours. That really isnt a long time. They might read to them or try and teach them what they are capable of learning at that age. Does the school have a list of what would happen while the child was there? I cant see them offering a placement for children that doesnt teach them something or prepare them for things. See if you can talk with some of the people in charge of the class. Thank you for reading my comment! :) Have a good day! Bay xx

I think it's a toss up. My son is 14 months old and enjoys playing with other children, but does he Need to at this age? No, I don't think so. There is nothing wrong with it, but it's not necessary. If he has trouble separating from you or has not been around other children he could benefit from it. I won't be putting my son in a toddler group, but I do take him to story hour and playdates once in a while, simply because he enjoys it.

I will consider toddler group only IF I decide to start work. I agree with you about it not being really necessary. Thnks for the response.

I really think a 1.5 yr old baby is very small. he should stay at home. But i have seen nowadys many schools are coming like these. I think its a part of their business where some parents want their children to be there. But it has little positive things too. children learn to mix up with others and enjoy to have company of other children.

Though I agree that 1.5 is too young and don't know what they intend to do there, the main point is that it is only 2 hours and I have been offered a job there too. That is why I am CONSIDERING. Haven't taken a decision yet. I still have 7 months before I need to decide. I am checking all aspects before I take a decision. Thanks for the response:)

I think if your son doesn't have any playmate at home with the same age as he... then it will be nice to put him in a toddler group... this is like an early way of teaching him how to socialize with others...it would also develop a lot of things in him like cooperation, motor skills, social skills, etc., etc....i would do it if i have the opportunity... I saw how my niece grew up without any playmate... and i tell you... she acts like theres no tomorrow everytime she sees kids her age...

lol..actually my son does have kids his age here (he is just a year old)...our immediate neighbour's son is just 4 months younger than he is. And there are lots of kids of different age groups who he interacts with at different levels. The older ones tend to mother him..and the boys enjoy playing ball with him. And he loves all the attention:) Thanks for the response.

One way, it's good to send him to play school b'cause he'll be exposed to anew environment as well as people where there is a scope for his entertainment. If you think the otherway, he is too young to go to school as I feel it is his free time in life which he can never get after the age of 3. As there is no looking back or time to relax and enjoy like he does now once he starts his career as a student of KG. So, take enough time and take a wise decision. Good luck.

I will be going to the school and watchig what they do exactly (next week). My older son started at the same school when he was 3 (there was no toddler group then and we didn't want him to start school till he was 3). NOw, I find that with 2 kids, I cannot spend the same quality time that I spent with my first child with the second. My husband's opinion is that if anyways I am only spending 2 hours of quality time with him, why not send him to a toddler group where someone else can do something constructive and I will also spend the same2 hours when he gets back. But I don't want to do that unless they are doing constructive there. What's the point of paying money and not gaining nothing? I still have 7 months to decide. Thanks for the response!

A social contact for young children helps a lot as these children can communicate well with each other. They definately enjoy they time playing together. If you have the chance to send your toddler to the group, it is very good too.

I am only considering (especially because I got a job offer from the same place). My older one never went to a toddler group (the school didn't have it when we started him and even if they did I wouldn't have). My son does get to meet other children..so interaction isn't really a problema and I've already started potty training (he will turn one year old in a day)....so he might be ready to go to the toddler group in 7 months. I'm just considering all options.
