When did all this hugging start?

Here's one for the holidays. When you meet family and friends, do you hug as a greeting?
Seems once upon a time hugging was reserved for major life (and death) events, such as births, graduation, marriage, funerals. Or for people in the theater. Now everyone does it, all the time.
When did this start?
OK, I admit I'm from an emotionally stunted family. But are you, like me, a somewhat reluctant hugger?

It has always been around, but you may have missed it in your family. My family is not that affectionate, so we don't hug all the time, but I would be ok if we did, and I do with other people I am close with, like my friends. What is wrong with hugging? Does it make you uncomfortable? I think it is a wonderful way to greet the people you love. It shows that you care.

Nothing wrong with hugging, per se. In some cultures, and for some people, it's completely natural, I'm sure. It does make me a bit uncomfortable, just as if we all started kissing on both cheeks like the French do. It seems a bit 'affected'. But I'm sure that's because I didn't grow up doing it. It just suddenly seemed to be a requirement.

Happy Thanksgiving, btw. This discussion is intended to be humorous. I'm not trying to be negative (much).

I love beeng hugged. It is part of my tradition and way of living that we hug and kiss people that we love and care, people we respect, people bringing good news but also in sad situation to comfort. Somethimes when I cant sleep or if I am feeling down my husband will hug me and thats how I fall asleep.
