There's this comedy in which a man says "By Godfrey, this time he's gone too far". I look up the dictionary but cannot find the meaning of "by Godfrey". I googled it and saw someone use it that way. My American friend has no idea what it means, saying it might me just an emphasis. But it has to have a meaning, right?

So in this phrase it's just an exclamation. Thank you for your explanation! It helped a lot!

I think it's used by people who don't like to use the word "God" in that type of phrase. Myself I sometimes say "by God this time...."
