Do you feel safe when you are using an ATM?

I hate using an ATM because I am always afraid someone will pull a gun on me and force me to withdraw all my money! This wouldn't happen if you were to go to a teller like in the good old days. The worst part is the bank won't reimburse you if you are robbed at one of their machines. How do you feel about this? Someone once told me you can enter you PIN backwards to call the police but I soon found out that wasn't true. Should ATM's be made more safe??

I never use ATMs. I use a check card and if I want cash, I just get some cash back when I pay for something else. It works for me. I guess if I has to use an ATM, I would use one at the grocery store or inside the bank. My bank has a little enclosure that you have to swipe your card through a slot just to get the door to open. There are cameras in each corner and one at the ATM itself. It takes your picture when you withdraw money. There is an emergency button on the machine itself that you can push if needed. I don't know about other banks, but if you are robbed inside the kiosk, my bank will refund you the amount that was last withdrawn. So, if you take out $20 and then someone forces you take out $500 (the machine limit) the bank will refund your $500 but not your $20.
I guess because there are so many cameras in the little building, it is very unlikely anyone would rob you inside the kiosk. Also, you would have to have let them in or they would have to approach you before you got in. Since my bank charges me fees for using non-bank ATMs, I just don't use the ATM.

I just take precautionary measures. I avoid ATMs in places that are dark or known to have a high crime rate. It's better if there's a security guard nearby. I transact very quickly so I can leave right away.
And very important: Get in your car, lock it, then drive away immediately. Count your money somewhere else!

I do not feel as safe as i used to when taking money or using the ATM machines. i am more worried about whether the machine has been tampered with and my money and information will be stolen or not. More and more people are putting devices on the machines to take peoples card and pin numbers to access money from their accounts. That worries me more than being robbed at gunpoint, which does not happen often here. It is not as safe as it used to and you would think the cameras would help more in catching the criminals.

Well,I have no problems of using an ATM. I'm not that afraid but I do think we should try to be careful. We should pay attention to the environment around us as well as the people. If there's anything that we feel not safe or alright, then we shouldn't withdraw the money. We can go to the bank with a friend so that it's much safer.Usually we should be careful that no one sees our password and account number.Gernerally speaking,if we pay certain attention to it,it's much more convenient to use an ATM.We can go there whenever we want to.There's no time limitation:) Hopefully you'll have better feelings for it in the future. Best wishes!

I can understand that you feel vulnerable. The young and the elderly are often preyed upon. I am an elderly person and have it all worked out so I feel safe using ATM's. I never use the ones in convenience stores. I use the bank ATM's and only those that are inside the bank so you have to slide your card to open the door. I also try to use them during the day or early in the evening not late at night. So if you are going out at night you should take your cash out early in the evening at a bank that is in a well lit area and where you have to slide your card. Then before you leave the safe area put your money away, look outside and don't leave if you see a suspicious person lurking about. Leave when you see other people on the street. Upon exiting look behind you to see if someone is following you. If you suspect anything cross the street, walk close to other people, take out your cell phone or enter the next open café or restaurant. If you think you are stalked tell a person at the place. Be safe.

I would think that you are pretty much as safe at the ATM as you are almost anywhere noadays. I mean you could be walking from your car to your office and someone drive by and shoot you. The same could happen at an ATM. I do however like to try to find the ATM's that are well lighted, and if I can find one that is not outside that is even better. In my city we have many ATM's just on street corners in the downtown area, those I think are the only ones that I really do not feel safe using because it is out in the open in a high crime area.

I think if you take money from ATM in the day, there must be very safe, because the robbers always work at the late night, so make sure not to take money at the late night. Also i have a suggestion, you can creat two back accounts, one is used to deposit small amount money, and the other one can be used to deposit large amount. when you need to take large amount, you can go to the bank teller, and when you need small amount, just use the Atm
