I would like to know just how many people truly feel thankful during this time of the year. Are these people being truthful? Or, are they just mouthing the expected platitudes? I know of some people who don't have very much to be thankful for. You might say that they should be thankful for being alive, etc. But I just don't feel this is necessarily true. What are your feelings on this subject?

I love the Holiday season. I always feel thankful for my husband, my family and my cats at Thanksgiving. Its a day that gives me a pause and makes me remember what I have instead of what I don't have.
Plus the holidays are the only time of year when you can really tell/show people how much you appreciate/like/love them and its socially ok. Thats Why I love the holidays.

I don't agree with what you say about the holidays being the only time you can show people how much you love and appreciate them, Aurone. That is something that should be done on a daily basis. That is one reason I don't get into the season as much as I once did. People are supposed to be loving and giving all year long.

It's a hard thing to think about. We are told that everyone has things to be thankful for, but it's not necessarily true.
When I was a child, I once got punished at school for not participating in a Thanksgiving project that required we incorporate things we were thankful for. I simply couldn't think of anything. The teacher went as far as to start making suggestions to me, and every one she made was offensive because it assumed things about my life that weren't true: that I had a loving family, that I was going to have dinner on Thanksgiving, that I worshiped her deity, that I wasn't abused, that I was healthy, etc etc.
I have a few things that I am thankful for these days, but there have definitely been many years where I didn't. And even now, most of the people around me will say they are thankful for things that I simply don't have or understand.

I understand where you are coming from, lecanis. People mistakenly assume that when the subject of thankfulness comes up you are speaking of material things. That is not the first thought that comes to my mind when the subject arises. When you think of all the things it is possible to lose it puts a damper on thankfulness. Maybe I have just lost too much.

I am so thankful to be able to spend Thanksgiving with my family. Am thankful for so many things life has to offer but most of all for being able to celebrate our first Thanksgiving with our new, 3 month old granddaughter today. Our grandkids live out of state and it's a real treat to be with them this year. Am thankful for having 3 wonderful daughters also and we will be together later today.
I do believe there are others who are sad during the holidays and may not be able to spend time with friends and family. Mood swings tend to go up and down during this time of the year.
I'm one of those people who does feel very thankful for being alive.

I think that's great, carolbee, and I'm sure you will have a very pleasant day. It is true that many people are affected by different circumstances which impede their ability to be truly thankful.

Thanksgiving is a day for eating turkey and visiting with friends and family, if you have a mind to. Giving thanks is an everyday affair, all 365 of them, year after year. Appreciation for whatever one has is a way of asking for more. Everyone has thousands of things to be thankful for, even those who seem to have little or nothing. If a person can find little to be grateful for, they are just not looking hard enough or are not aware of who they truly are. Giving thanks everyday for something in your life, be it perceived as good or bad, is the best way to expand your possibilities. If you are not appreciating what you have right now, what makes you think that you deserve more? (not you personally). Giving thanks is a full time joy, not a one day of the year event.

I can't find any reason to argue with that, sigma. I guess I am thinking that sometimes circumstances conspire to make you feel less thankful than you should.

Well friend, i always feel thankful for whatever i am and i keep thanking God for whatever he has done for me. I generally compare myself with people who are not that much supported both financially and physically.

You have a great attitude, mdchennai! We should be thankful for whatever state we are in because there is always someone worse off.

being thankful is for own good, thats what the bible says, you mare right, there are many people for whom we think there is no point in living, but ask them to say truthfully ,they want to live for some more time.we do not know many things now but once we reach eternity you shall know.i am really thankful; for this life the good LORD has given me although all circumstances are not in my favour.

Yes, riyasam, I know that we are all supposed to be thankful, but due to circumstances some have not made it to that point.

I am one who is thankful. I have a lot of reminders this time of year that I am thankful. Two great kids were born this week, mine. I get together with my family, we use a Thanksgiving book to give us reminders of what we are thankful for. We have humorous and serious quotes about previous years of Thanksgiving. Sometimes we have something confront us right up front, that makes us thankful. Looking back at other years increases my gratitude. I know that some people, because of their situation, or because of their personality, have a hard time being thankful. I give them their space to not feel that way.

That last sentence does not make much sense. What I was trying to say is that if someone does not feel thankful because they are having a hard time right now, it is okay that they not feel thankful, I would not try to say they are bad or wrong for it. I am thankful, and that is quite simply my choice, but I will not judge those who are not.

We all have many things to be thankful for, if we are really honest. That said, this year I honestly don't FEEL thankful for a lot. Last year I was moved to tears in thankfulness. But regardless of my feelings, I am aware of the blessings God has given me, and I am thankful for them.

I really do feel thankful for what I have and whom I have left in my small circle of family n friends, those that stuck through my bs and being a burden not letting those that wanted to be free, do so. I have been hard on a few people that at this point, now, only realize it may have been for the best but I truly was and always will be thankful for the good times they shared at best . . .
It has not been easy but it sure has been enlightening and thats all I ever want from life, bad or good enlighten me and let me help enlightening you too !

I am. I'm really in cloud nine these this year. For one, I found the love of my life again. I lost my very beautiful partner before. And now, we are back in each other's arms. Also, I was promoted in my job as a Operations Manager. Wow, everything really falls into the right place. God bless us all.

I often reflect on what I have to be thankful for, but not just on Thanksgiving but all the time. Sometimes I reflect back on the past year, and if it's been a tough one I often think, gee, how did I survive this year. Last year was like that for me, with so many things going on in my life. I'm always thankful for a roof over my head..okay may not be a palace, but it's better than being homeless. So if anything, having a place to live is my greatest thanks that I have

Hello!
Am always thankful everyday. Whether am down or up, I always feel thankful about it. Life is full of trials and hardship and I treat those trials positively. I've been through a lot in life and it made me who I am now and just by that I'm thankful. There are a lot of things in life to be thankful about, not just material things but also small things we take forgranted. Yes, I am thankful. Always will be. Take care. *smile*

I can honestly say I do feel thankful this time of the year but sometimes it takes a holiday or something else to make me realize it, if you know what I mean. I think we all tend to get caught up in our own little world with our own problems and I know personally I sometimes need to be jolted back to reality and reminded of those who are really less fortunate! That having been said, I’m sure there are those who really can’t think of much of anything – if, indeed anything at all – to be thankful for, even to be alive and that’s very sad, indeed.
