Everyone has trouble sleeping sometimes, but at what point do you need to seek professional help? How long do you risk being sleep deprived, and what are some self treatments that you should try first?

i think the first tihng that you should try for is do yoga regularly.its really helps.you can also do some kind of meditation to cool and relax your mind.normally a person does not feel sleepy when he or she is very tensed.for that you should avoid thinking a lot for any situation, since the things are going to happen will happen.all that one needs to think is aobut the solution.however people normally keep thinking about the problem only.if one is not able to sleep for even 4-5 hours in a day for some 5-6 consequently then this is a serious problem, which needs quick attention by a specialist.

I've read that computer and tv is a no-no thing to do before going to sleep. Doing sports is also not a good idea since it will keep you more awake. Do not look at the time and do not force yourself to sleep. If you're not sleepy do other things that can make you fall asleep. Have you already tried reading books? In this way, it'll help you divert your mind from you the things that you would often think about. But don't read suspense or thriller because this won't help as well. You can also try listening to a soothing music, taking a warm bath to relax your muscles or drinking warm tea (but decaf please) or milk.

Hi GeekyMommy,
Sleep at any point of time shoud not be deprived.Science say 5 hours of sound sleep is enough at young age. If you are not getting sleep at all, this means you are thinking on some thing that is not necessary to think so much. In that case before you go to your bed do Meditation for 15 minutes. You will get good sleep. But it will take some time to get practised to Meditation. Never Mind.
But your lack of sleep is disturbing you in your daily activites, and if you feel that you are not thinking on any thing, please consult a doctor. Please dont ignore this problem for a long time.
I wish you speedy recovery from your problem.
