How do you feel about pro sporting events being played on holidays? Do you feel that athletes should be given that day off so they can spend it with their families or do you feel that is better to have sporting events on holidays for families at home to watch or attend the events? As much as I love sports, I think they should be given the major holidays off to be with their loved ones. I do not need to watch sports on the big holidays.

I don't see why sports shouldn't be played on the holidays. Take for example professional football. Every single one of those players grew up watching the game on Thanksgiving day. They knew what life they were choosing for themselves, and many of the players probably even dreamed of playing in the big Thanksgiving Day game. People choose the type of life they want. Athletes know what is going to be expected of them before they sign on the dotted line.

Very good points that you made as some athletes do feel honored to be able to play on a major holiday, like football or basketball. It seems as only certain teams get to play on the big holidays and some athletes do look forward to it very much, especially if the game is important to their team making the playoffs.

Also, not everyone has the same values on family. For some, playing in the big game may be more important than what day exactly they spend Thanksgiving together. Maybe they all get together on Friday instead.

To be fair they shouldn't be forced to play, most will have families and should be able to spend time without having to worry about games etc.
Most people generally have other things on their minds and don't always watch sports. I know football here has a low turn out when it's christmas, execpt when they lower the ticket prices by half. (which draws in the crowd) but yeah, they shouldn't play over these periods.

Who are we to say ..when time should be spent with Family..thanksgiving is a manmade holiday..it's not a mandate from Sacred Scripture.
I dont think you will have any sport's activities on Christmas day.
I think we can't impose our wishes on everyone..
Not everyone can be with Family on Thanksgiving..and to say they are wrong for playing on the Holiday is very narrow..I am sorry..but this is my opinion..

Thanksgiving and Christmas should be spent with their families. Those are the major holidays which we all should spend with our families or friends. But since they are getting paid big bucks and they know that holiday games are part of their career, they should participate if their teams are selected to play on these days. It would be terrible if one or more of the athletes were to get seriously injured during a holiday game.

Well, I think this should be a choice that should be left to each individual player, as when they decide to accept a contract with a professional team, and then take on marriage, kids, etc. I am sure that they know the deal of what to expect when they sign the contracts to play, so I am sure they find time before to Celebrate with family and friends or afterwards, so I am sure it does not really bother any of them.

There are plenty of times I have to work on Thanksgiving or a holiday. The last two christmases I had to fly out on Xmas day for work.
Professional athletes already get so many concessions because they are celebrities. Why should their job be different from other people who have to work? They knew the live they were choosing. I don't feel bad for them.

I agree with you. Sport's players should take time to observe the holidays. I feel sorry for those who play during the holidays. It should be a time for family, friends and relaxing moments.

it depends on the occasion i think (though they are on important game competition or not). so if they are in a big match, i think its necessary for them to do exercise. if not, i think they deserve to get holiday. oh c'mon, they are still human being, right? who still need time for rest and spend time with family. so in my opinion they deserve to get holiday in that situation then

I dont think it's so bad in one way..more people are off and able to attend them..which may motivate them to when more..I think the Phillies should have all their games on holidays;) Happy Thanksgiving Ken:)

I like the fact that there is football on Thanksgiving and Christmas. But I do feel bad that they have to miss out on time with their families. But then again they get paid all the big money so they should just suck it up.

I do not think that games should be played on holidays. I think holidays should be spent with family. Not watching the TV or going to games. Family is so very important and society seems to be doing anything but spending time with family. Just my humble opinion

I think they deserves holdays off as much as anyone else. They should still have the time for their families that we have. People don't even need to watch sports on the holidays anyway. It is a time to be with family. I mean, watching a little bit is okay, but I know people that devote holidays to solely watching tv and not paying attention to family.

When a pro athlete is making $20-30 bucks an hour, then they can have the holidays off. They get compensated plenty for sacrificing family time. Besides, with the NBA, how could they possibly be in so many places at one time? Many players have children all over the US.
It would suck to be a Lions veteran, but players get paid an extraordinary amount of money. (Maybe that's why Barry retired mysteriously.)
