Not sure if it is genetic but it certainly can spread if you come into contact with someone who has coldsores. The bad news is..I read it somewhere that once you get coldsore once, you are likely to get it again and again. I also read that cutting down on potato intakes will help reduce the chances of getting cold sores. Not sure how effective it is but if you are really prone to the annoying coldsores, no harm trying.

According to webmd "Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause lip and mouth sores (herpes labialis) and genital herpes if your skin comes into contact with either type."
They can be spread by coming into contact with a cold sore on someone else. There are treatments usually ointments, that can be used if they don't disappear on their own in a few days.

Well..if your getting coldsores, then you more than likely have a type of Herpes. (don't worry it's not the type of herpes your thinking of, and it is pretty common for people all over the world) I don't know too much more on the subject, but i do know that the herpes systems are likely do occur during times when you are sick with the common cold or etc.
