It could be a movie star like Kevin Costner; or Meryl Streep...or a Rock star such as Prince...or a political figure such as Mrs Thatcher...or an international treasure such as Princess Diana or Mother Teresa...who for you is the ultimate icon of the most flamboyant decade of the 20th Century???

That is simple,it is Madonna. She ruled the 80's.Her music, her fashion, and her attempts at movies and her private life. And her career bloomed as the music videos were becoming more important.

I saw her recently in "Desperately Seeking Susan", and I was struck at how good she was in the part. It was her greatest role in my opinion; apart from "Evita". She was incredible in that.

"Desperately Seeking Susan" was one of several light-hearted eighties movies centring on the outsider lifestyle, and probably the best thanks to charming performances by Aidan Quinn and Rosanna Arquette, and the chemistry between them. But Madonna walked away with the movie. There was an innocence about the movie which makes the '80s themselves look innocent which of course they weren't. Absolutely. Madonna really nailed the role of Susan. She was never to be so at ease in a movie again... until "Evita", a marvellous version of the musical, which witnessed Madonna's best ever singing in my opinion. She really pulled the stops out for that part.

Funny you mention Evita. I was listening to it as I answered your post. I loved Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan. And until Evita, it was my favorite Madonna movie. And Susan's look was my favorite look for Madonna until I saw her at an awards show where she came out in a outfit that was straight out of the 70's. Bell bottom low cut jeans and a tank top and she had a long blonde ponytail.

I heard so much about the Iron Lady of Great Britain, Mrs. Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s and throughout her 1st, 2nd and third term as Prime Minister. Former PM of Israel, Menachem Begin was a great man, too! Operation Opera in 1981 was awesome and amazing.
