Has anyone tried other operating systems besides Windows. I have recently requested a free OS that is being offered. Has anyone dowloaded a free OS from the internet? Once you did did you delete the windows..Or did you delete windows first. I would think you need to keep windows until you have the new OS on the system right? Thanks: Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi littlefranciscan! We have been using Windows for the longest time although it is user friendly, so many viruses attack windows most of the time. That is why we always have are anti-virus at hand all the time. However, my husband is considering to download Linux on the other computer but he is going to see if it will work out just fine before he delete windows. Take care and have a nice day. :)

I am thinking about getting me a second computer off ebay..one that has no os..I have sent for ubuntu..or something like that which is an os.. I guess I could also send for linux.. I think both are free versions. I think it costs alot of money to keep your computer running; almost as bad as maintaining your car.

Hi littlefranciscan! I haven't heard about ubuntu but I know that linux is great and almost virus free. I guess it is because people are more keen on using windows that many people are creating virus so they can sell more anti virus programs. I do agree with you that computers are costly to maintain, my husband just purchased one and at the same time have it upgraded too. The cost incurred could pay our three months household bills. It is very expensive but he needs it for his works and designs. I just hope he will make more money out of it. haha.. Take care and have a nice day. :)

There are some things I know only Windows applications can do, so I would never get rid of it completely. I've tried Ubuntu, Xubuntu, OpenSuSE, CentOS, Mandriva, SimplyMEPIS, PCLinuxOS, Freespire, and Linux Mint. I use a partition manager on WinPE to manually partition my hard drive before installing Linux. Linux Mint is my favorite, because it's attractive, easy to use, and very nimble. Some of the greatest things about Linux are its speed, inherent security, and low maintenance. In Linux, you never have to defragment a hard drive, clean a registry, or reboot after installing updates. But there's a problem with Linux...I use a USB mouse, USB keyboard, USB printer, and two or three USB storage devices at a time. Most important is my 2 GB Kingston flashdrive, which stores a better half of my applications, including my e-mail client. Windows can handle the strain, Linux cannot. Continuously running applications on USB devices will crash, and the pointer will stop responding to the mouse. All I can do at this point is hit Ctrl + Alt + Del on the keyboard and reboot, losing anything that hadn't been saved prior to the crash. Every distro I've tried (that would work with my hardware) has this problem. I also understand there is a "power saving" issue with USB that affects not only Linux, but Mac OS as well, so my problem may be in the actual UNIX core. I've reported this problem in a couple forums, and hope it gets resolved quickly. Linux has huge potential, and is much more convenient for personal, everyday use than Windows. But until this bug gets worked out of the kernel, Windows is the only OS that facilitates my needs. Cheers! -santuccie P.S.: Laughing at dumb jokes is still good for your health!!!

Sounds like you have done it all in the line of the OS..I don't think I see "mac" in there.. Have you tried this..Many are trying to tell me this is best. But since I work for a Payroll Company..I have heard from those using the Mac..that it's not always easy to integrate with some programs online. Is Mac a form of linux?

As you know, I just bought a Macbook so now I am using Mac instead of Windows, though I have Windows XP on it as well. These are the only types of operating systems that I have used but have been told that Linux is a good system as well. Windows is very unstable and vulnerable to attacks, which is why I went to Mac. You should try Mac as I think you would like it and the features that it has on it. The graphics programs on here are wonderful as well.

Well..I just had to replace my faithful computer..due to two trojans and a hacker..I now have vista..and it is much easier to use on a desktop than a laptopl. I was up two nights in a row trying to secure my security on the old computer.. Now I have norton on this computer..and am going to pay for it after the trial.. I hated to buy a new computer..not as expensive as a mac..it was a $398 special at walmart.. I am going to work on the old one..Maybe I will learn to repair computers with this old one;) HOpe you had a good Thanksgiving Ken..I am afraid of Yahoo Messenger.. Got to find another one so we can chat:) Joy

As of now, I dual-boot with Windows Server 2003 and Ubuntu. Love Ubuntu, not a huge fan of Windows. Any of the versions.

So you use Ubuntu: I didnt know you can use two sets of OS in one computer. I suppose you would have to have alot of memory to do this?

Long time ago I use Basic, which is a very old operating system. Now besides Windows, I don't know how to use other operating systems. After all, Windoes is the best for me.

Yup, I have downloaded a free OS from the internet. Its called Kubuntu from Linux and its absolutely free. In installing new OS you have to either reformat the computer, that means delete the current OS and install the new OS, or make a virtual pc without deleting the current OS, that means two os in one computer or two computer in equivalent. You can request Kubuntu here: http://shipit.kubuntu.org/ Its pretty much like windows vista.
