Hometown Recognition

I recently finished reading a book(novel) by a prominent writer, and I was mildly surprised to find that the little town where I grew up and went to school was mentioned in the book. Not only that, several of the surrounding communities were also featured in the book. I felt a real sense of pride because it is a very small town, and not what you would consider a bustling center of activity. That led me to wonder how the author discovered the area in the first place. I plan to visit her website today and find out if she gives any details on why she placed a great deal of the action in that location. I really loved that place and enjoyed reading the book so much. Do you live in a small town that has ever been mentioned in a work of fiction? Did you ever live in such a place?

I grew up in a rather small town in Arkansas. I have never seen it mentioned in any kind of literature. Closest I get, is in the Laurell K Hamilton books where she mentions areas of Missouri where I have been.

Are you serious? You're really a fan of Laurell K. Hamilton, Aurone? I am also a big fan of hers. She writes such racy stuff! And, I am familiar with the area you are speaking of.

The city I live in isn't really small, but is has been put on the map by the new movie "American Gangster", starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. The main character was from the city I now live in.

I saw it in the theatre. Really riveting. The action is fast and there's never a dull moment.

No. I have never lived in a small town but I live near D.C. and parts of my town has a history that goes back to George Washington's time. And I was born in Phiadelphia, another historic city.

The area that I mentioned was not my literal hometown, sarah, but I like to think of it that way since I moved there at the age of 4.

You know the song "Camptown Races"? (...gonna run all night, gonna run all day, Camptown races 5 miles long doo da doo da...") Well I live 4 miles from the real Camptown. I have also been to the home Stephen Foster once lived in which is 6 miles from where I grew up.

It's great to hear of or read about fictional things happening in your hometown. Maybe the author of the book you read is from your hometown, which is probably why she knows so much about it? I've been having similar experiences, but it's about references to my country, not my hometown. On CSI a few weeks back, the family that was 'murdered' had Filipino traditions. Last week, the TV show Degrassi: The Next Generation featured the debut party of a Filipino girl in Canada. Last night on CSI: NY, they showed a rock from the Corregidor islands in the Philippines. And while I was listening to Britney Spears' song "Piece of Me," there was also mention of the Philippines. But I guess I'd be more in awe and proud if someone mentions or refers to my hometown in a book, song, or TV show. :)

It does give one a heady feeling, shooting_star, to have their own insignificant little hometown mentioned in a work of fiction.

hi! that was cool..I'll be interested in reading such book too..if it features my hometown, but unfortunately..never heard, never read anything printed about my small hometown in the province..:) maybe..I'll be the one to write a fiction about it..it would be great right? :) only if I have those writing skills...:( good to be back here..:)

They’ve featured a few of the small towns near me on Law and Order episodes and at first it was like “Hey, cool, there’s a character from __!” but the way these people were portrayed and the general idea it gave of the area where I live made that change quickly to, “Oh, no, do we really seem that bad to the rest of the country?” Great topic! Well, anniepa, we do have to take the bad along with the good. No place is all one or the other. We used to have a section in our daily newspaper devoted to mention of our town in fiction. It was great to read how famous we were becoming.
