To all Filipinos: English or Filipino as medium of teaching?

What is your preferred medium of teaching: English or Filipino? The reason I asked this is because in my opinion that to be globally competitive,English should be the medium.I was talking recently to a retired Malaysian English teacher in his 60's and he rued the fact that most of his countrymen, especially the younger generation are getting dumber and dumber, pardon the expression, since Bahasa Melayu became the medium of instruction. He says that it's a good thing their country is wealthy, thanks to crude oil, otherwise they wouldn't be able to compete globally.

i think it depends where you are at. I live in the US and I think that people dealing with and coming into this country should know our language. I also think that if I were to have business with or go to your country then it is my responsibilty to learn your language.

Certainly. It would feel very awkward dealing with pseudo translators, because some things may be lost in translation, due to the different cultural backgrounds.

I prefer English to be the medium of instruction. Basic reason for this is that Pilipino is quite a limited language and there are a lot of English words with no direct Pilipino translation. This makes teaching in Pilipino difficult. Also, even within the Philippines, due to the rise of call centers, there is a lot of demand for people with a better command in English.

Quite true.Btw,did you know that the Philippines has emerged a strong second to India in the global outsourcing market?.In 2006 it recorded a US$3.6B in earnings a 50% jump from 2005 and is expected to earn as much as US$12.2B in 2010.That means more jobs will be created and people with a good command of English have a better chance of getting a slice of the pie. And all because of the Filipino's ability to speak good English.

I remember I was in high school when the DECS tried using Filipino as a medium of teaching. We were having a hard time catching up because we were not used to hearing our Math lectures done in Filipino. I think we only did it for like 3 weeks when our school decide to go back to the old method. We often joke about Mathematical terms translated in English. Like for example the square root..we jokingly call it "kwadradong ugat"..^^

I think that in the Philippines, the medium of teaching should be both. English for English subjects (Math, Science, etc) and Filipino for Filipino subjects. It is also important that we have knowledge in using both languages. I think a person is not dumb just because he/she cannot speak in English properly.

Preferably English! It's the language being used by everyone! Even during interviews, people definitely speak English. To be globally competitive, in addition to the necessary skills required, communication is definitely a must. :)

A mixture of both Filipino and English should be the way to go. As you mentioned English is the medium to be globally competitive. However, we must not forget our origins and so we must still continue to cherish our own language.

I studied on a private school during my high school days, english is their medium of teaching there. We can only speak filipino language at class during the filipino subject, or if we're just talking with one another. Our history, science and other subjects are using the english language. I believe it does help, since I won't be here if I was not made aware by our school to the english language. We can always use our native language, after class and even at home. But when at school, it would be nice to learn atleast how to speak or use english words and not just simply learning it.

I guess, this has all to do with globalization and open-trade/free trade. We are all obliged to speak English in a manner that will hide our accent or in a standard based on theirs. but going back to your topic, i guess, there are subjects that English is not really needed. History for one can be spoken in our own language. The thing with the Malayan experience is that they seemed to see English as something more important than theirs. No, they are not dumber, it's just that people in their place find it comfortable speaking and understanding things in Bahasa. The Filipinos are better linguists I guess because we have been oriented deeply with English not just by the Americans but also the Brits.

as a student, honestly speaking I want taglish because the students can easily understand the topic and can easily express his or her idea. And the discussion is more enjoying and interacting when speaking in Filipino. I rather speak in Filipino when reciting than speak English but look stupid in front of the class because of wrong grammar and your classmates will make fun of you. ^_^
