Would you pay to go to a craft fair?

Are me and hubby cheap? I like to go to craft fairs, I love doing crafts. I love to go to craft fairs and get ideas and buy gifts for birthdays and Christmas gifts. I will go in if it is free to enter or even a dollar. Last weekend was craft fairs all over. One place was $4 to get in each and yet another wanted $3 to go in. We just left those places as we thought it was too much. It would be $6 for the privilege of buying their stuff. Are we being cheap or should it be free to get in and the money spent at the stalls. It seems to me that the sellers are paying to sell and that pays for the hall so why should they charge to get in too. What do you think?

$3 and $4 seem like nothing compared to some that I want to go. There is this huge craft show here in australia and I always wanted to go so this year I told my husband lets go. So I went to check it out on the internet and could not find admition prices so I rang them . She told me it was $18.90 for adults and kids over the age of 4 was $6.50 so I said what do we get with that and she was like what do you mean that is just to get in. so I said apart from the craft shop things and the clases (which were extra) and exebition of craft that has won prizes what else is ther. She goes there would be entertainment for the kids for free (well it isnt free since we just payed for it) and I said who is coming she said some clown would have 2 shows a day (11 and 5). we didnt go instead I will take my son to the zoo and it would cost me half of that.

Wow $18.90 that is steep. I would want a four course meal with that! I bet a lot of people only go once!

I know what you mean if they made it reasonable to get in I would make a day of it too and probably spend a lot more.

yes it would have been almost $40 for us 3 so I didnt go if it was a reasonable price yes why not make a day out of it but at that price I can spend my money better. And then she said free entertainment for the kids yeah right I could hire the clown for 2 hours and it would cost me less.

Hallo whywiki :D i think $4 its too much for seeing product. Person who like to sell a lot of product should give it for free. So that all customers feel at home and more interesting with the product not with the cost that they just paid. If the wanna exchange the money from the hall rent, they should add it in the price of the product.

I'm with you! I think it's just silly to charge admission to art fairs and craft fairs. If the didn't charge you to get in, you would have more to spend on the items they have for sale. More people would come as well, resulting in more sales. To me it seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot by allowing admission to be charged. Nobody listens to me though. *sigh*

I think it would depend on what kind of craft fair it was. If it was just crafts sellers at booths, then probably not. But if they were having entertainment and demonstrations them I might pay $3 or less to get in. There is a western fair here in California, which I didn't get to go to, but they have country music singers and demonstrations and other such things. They do charge a fee to get in, but in that case I think it would be worth the charge.

I have to agree with you. I love craft shows but, I draw the line at paying more than a couple of dollars. I have even seen show that charge $20 to get in. That is just rediculous. The argument is that it will discourage the lookie-loos from just going into the show to "steal" ideas from the vendors. I say it ends up costing vendors money. People spend the money on admission that they could have spent on buying another craft item from a craft vendor. I hope vendors stop participating in such expensive fairs and the promoters will have to stop charging so much.

I am guilty of being a lookie loo but if the craft is cheap enough and the fair cheap enough to get in I would buy the craft and then copy it. I guess maybe I ma part of the problem...

Hi whywiki I like crafts too and I dont mind paying to get into a craft show. But it really should be free to get in. Because you are buying their crafts. Correct?

I love craft fairs to. I just cannot find any in my area. I would not mind paying a $1.00 or $2.00, but I would not attend a fair where I have to pay more than that. They charge the vendors already I don't understand why they want additional funds. If I am going to purchase items and you are not doing anything else besides displaying the vendors products, I wont pay. I agree with you.

For me, the entrance should be free to such fair, unless they have something there to offer like a show, aside from selling crafts and stuffs. I don't mind paying for a minimal fee, maybe to pay for maintenance and safety of the place, is quite acceptable, but I don't like overcharging.

Christmas Tree - This is a picture of a beautiful Christmas tree. It is a good example of a tree decorate in only 2 colors.
I feel the same way. I am not into paying for the priviledge to pay for something else. I really don't like the fact that flea markets and craft fairs charge admission. I make jewellery and crafts and I really want to go to the flea markets and craft fairs before Christmas to try to sell some of my work so that I can have my own money for shopping for Christmas gifts for my husband, but I worry about not many people comming to the craft fairs and flea markets because of the fee to get in, especially with Sunday shopping in most stores now. I think it is a real rip off, because they charge the sellers for thier tables and then charge the shoppers for getting in. It should be one or the other. I think haveing spent money to get in deters people from spending money once they are inside.

I totally agree with you, If I have already spent money to get in, I calculate that into the price of what I am buying and then it doesn't seem like such a bargain and I don't buy and it only hurts the sellers.

You know I wouldn't mind paying up to $5 either for myself because I really love crafts but my hubby is usually with me and he just goes to humour me I think and $10 is too much for only me to enjoy myself. At least that is how my little mind thinks.
