Cutting a cats nails.

Cat Paw - Cat Claws
Canada

I am having a hard time cutting my cats nails. When it comes to cutting her nails it is like the world is comming to the end....She refuses to let me cut them without a fight. I have tried on her terms, even taking her mind off what I was doing but in the end she ends up bighting me hard during the clipping. I was able to no problem before her vet visit for her spaying. Now forget about it. Does this mean she has had a tramatic event at the vets? or she is now terrified of any procedure? I need to cut her nails and I do not want to hurt her. Can anyone help me. Thanks

Geko, can you find someone to help by holding your cat? I have some that are nearly impossible to clip, even being held by someone else, but with help it can be done.

She allows me to cut her back claws no problem, but it is like her front claws are painful and I can't even touch her front paws ewithout her whinning and screaming and bitting her way to get free. I have finally bought a carpet fragment to avaoid her from taring up my carpet.

it sounds like someone may have cut them too close when she was young - a very easy thing to happen and those baby claws are needle sharp

Ceciliah Hi,Geko, I am from Nanaimo too and used to do volunteer work at a vets. When the claws of a cat are clipped at the vet's if the cat is being spayed the cat is always done when they are sleeping. At least that is the way most clinics do it. I am with ElicBxn, try and find someone to hold your cat while you clip, I did a friend of my mother's cat that way and the cat was more interested in what the stranger holding him was doing he didn't raise much of a fuss about the claw clipping. Hope that helps. Sincerily, Ceciliah

She may not have had trauma. Cutting nails is a strange thing to a dog or cat and if you have never done it before they may get freaked out not knowing what you are doing. The best thing to do is start handling your cat's feet more and getting her to associate it with good. When you hold her, rub her little toes with your fingers as part of your snuggling ritual. She will gradually see you touching and doing stuff to her feet as no big dlea but it will take time. If you had her spayed recently i am guessing that unless you rescued her from a bad situation and spayed her as an older cat, that she is young. And cats can feel totally differently about something as they mature too.

Oh OK thanks very much, I have started doing that and she now put her paw on my mouth wen she wants me to stop taking. She is changing slowly but as a stray she it will take time. She also experienced her first snow lets just say she did not like it very much.

As a former pet groomer I found crossing my legs put a soft blanket or pillow in your lap, breath slowly. The place the kitty paws towards you take gently to her. Now when cutting her front claws she is frightened of the clipper so of yougentle touch her paw while talking to her, gently touch your lower pointer finger knuckle to her nose, her eyes will close and clip slowly. make sure she is relaxed and comfortable. If she moves she is not comfortable. Most likely she will not notice you doing it for her eyes are closed and not paying much attention. Then after that is done give her a treat to know she did good. Let me know if it works for you.

I think they are scared because they don't know what is that thing and what you will be doing. Me i haven't tried to cut my cat's nail. I don't bother to cut it since they are using it in climbing.

Does she need any shots/vaccines? Your vet will probably be willing to trim her nails while she's there for a check-up. And since they handle reluctant cats all day, it'll probably be over in a couple of minutes and with very little angst.
