I noticed today that my Pitbull's urine is a brownish color. Could this be caused by a bladder infection? I don't even know if dogs get bladder infections. I plan on taking him to the vet if it continues. Has this ever happened to your dog? If so what was the cause?

Are you sure the urine is actually brown or is your dog getting "the runs" but its very diluted - making you think its just urine? If its truly urine, dogs that have brown urine sometimes have either have heartworm or leptosporosis. If its brownish red it could be a muscle disease. Lepto is something commonly vaccinated against and often treated with penicillan or antibiotics. Its not common for a dog to get just because its usually a required vaccination.
Good luck, and I hope its just something he ate.

Thanks for the info. He's only 1 yr.old. Could he possibly get heartworms that young? He is an inside dog and I got him when he was about 5 months old. So I didn't know too much about his health history. He has been neutered also. I'm praying its something treatable.

Just curious Hounds, but where are you from? I'm only wondering because Lepto isn't required by us. It's given anyway in the puppy combo-vax, but after that, it's usually never mentioned again! We do all the HW pills and tests, because we have a lot of mosquitoes around here, but I had never heard of Lepto being required. Thanks so much!

Liz~ You need to get your dog to the vet TODAY! The only time one of my dog's has had brown urine is when it had heartworms really really bad. I hope that you have taken the neccasary precautions for heartworms and that this isn't even possible, but if you haven't, I suggest you get him to the vet ASAP! Let us know what happens. Take care.

I guess I should of read your other comments before posting. I see that someone else already suggested heartworms. And I also seen that you took him to the vet and there is nothing to worry about. That's great!
You live in Louisiana? I just moved from there. That is where my dog had her treatment for heartworms. Man, there are A LOT of mosquitos in Louisiana! You have to be very careful. I hope the vet had you start him on Heartguard! I wish you the best of luck!

Hi,
Hope it will be better soon. Also it might be better to consult with a veterinary doctor soon. So the problems could be analyzed well and confusions and can be got ridden. Any how pets are be treated well to see them well. I do regular checkup of my pets every year and also in between if needed. Pitbull will get better soon.

It could be a bladder infection, although another "first indication" of those is usually the frequency of urination. Like when we get one. You feel the urge to go all the time and can't, or only get a little bit out. A lot of times, a darker colored urine like that can also be a sign that he's not drinking enough water, or that there is too much protein in his diet. Same thing happens to us. Ever notice the color changes between the first time you go in the morning and the times later in the day? The more you drink, the more diluted it will become. But you may also notice that a while after eating meat it gets darker again. If it was something more serious, like Heartworm, etc., as mentioned by Hounds here, there's usually other signs of illness, but it can never hurt to have him tested. If he's only one, you probably haven't gotten a heartworm test for him yet. At my vet, if you have your dog on Heartgard (or another heartworm preventative), you get a test every other year. If you only give it to them in high-risk months (usually about April through November), then you get one every year. It's transmitted by mosquitoes, so it's only 100% necessary when those are around, but a lot of people use it year round, in case one makes it past that first hard frost ;o) Hope everything's OK with him though! Pits are tough, don't worry!
