You can use your egold account even without funding. There is no monthly fee but a minimal 1% charge for every transaction you make.

I don't think so. We use e-gold as money processor. We have to transfer the amount we have in e-gold to other people's e-gold account or to our bank accounts thru another medium such as PGX in our case here in the Philippines. We can also spend e-gold to pay membership fees in the internet. But I don't think we can use it as that of a credit card.
