Ok so I'm getting really tired of non-smokers raving about how bad smoking is and how evil people are who smoke. Here's a little tid bit of info for ya. Yes smoking can cause some forms of lung cancer and have adverse effects on your lung health, guess what so does breathing air outside. However thats neither here nor there, my point here is to show you just how harmful drinking is and open your eyes abit because apperently people seem to think that smoking is the real killer when in fact drinking kills far more and it doesn't care who either.
As of 2004 61% of the ADULT American population drank. Now the reason why I put adult in caps is because we all know that there are a bit more minors who drink and aren't tallied.
Nationally 17,800 people were killed in just drunk driving accidents alone in 2006. 41% of all traffic deaths are alcohol related.
Oh and parents here's a shocker for you.. about 80% of all high school students have drank at least once and half of them continue to drink.
Excessive alcohol use is the third leading cause of death in the United States.
Oh and here's your list of all the health problems it causes...cancer, liver cirrhosis, stroke and birth defects. Drinking has also been linked to community blight as well as domestic violence, rape, assault, homicide, suicide, and lost productivity at work and school.
Each year, about 100,000 deaths in the United States are related to alcohol consumption.
Ok so since everyone's big kick is how smoking causes lung cancer here's a tidbit from the American Cancer Society...
Lung cancer is primarily a condition developed in old age, with average age of onset age 65.It's estimated more people will die of lung cancer in populations of older Americans, and where more older Americans live, there more lung cancer deaths will be estimated. More incidence of lung cancer and deaths from lung cancer are likely to occur in Florida than in any other state. That's where the highest percentage of retirees live. And that's where ACS estimates more lung cancers will occur. Lung cancer is a disease of old age, not smoking.
Smoking may actually help reduce the risk of breast cancer in some women, according to a study, published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. The study found that smoking reduces by 50 percent the risk of developing breast cancer in women who have a rare genetic mutation that can lead to to the disease.
Studies have shown evidence of an inverse relationship between smoking and the risk of contracting Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease. In fact, most studies show that the more one smokes, the lower the risk level.
So for all you "lets attack all the smokers" out there maybe, you're after the wrong people. Oh but wait I suppose most of you drink so you consider that ok, cause it only kills everyone instead of a handfull. It kills the lady and child 5 cars back. Or the wife who's pregant and husband comes home drunk. Hell second hand drinking kills more than smoking does, yet it seems no one has an issue with that.

If I want to smoke, so what! I am going to die of something some day. If the smoking kills me, at least I enjoyed it. I do not smoke in my house. I smoke on my indoor porch. I do not smoke around non-smoking people. But they still put me down.
Smoking in a car won't kill you, but talking on your cell phone might.

LOL.. OMG, it drives me nuts when folks drive while talking on their cell phones. Whast funny is these are the same people who are yelling at others for smoking. Sure you get mad when someone lights up but you'll get behind the wheel and then distract yourself. Wow.

I agree with what you said about drinking. It causes so many premature deaths. I am a regular smoker for more than forty years. I really wish if I could stop this unhealthy and expensive habit, but I am unable to. But I will not propagate or recommend smoking. The young generation should keep away from this bad habit. But I cannot support forced ban on public smoking. I don't think allowing smoking without directly disturbing others should be banned. It is an encroachment on an individual's fundamental rights.

Thank you!!!! At least someone has some good sense. Besides, regardless of the health concerns or whatever, smoking is a calculated risk ADULTS take. They know the pros and cons, they accept the risks, and they don't need to hear it from anyone else! Much like bungee jumping or sky-diving, they know what they're getting into.
Blessed Be

Very well put!
And what is even more annoying is people who were once smokers, but act holier than thou by shoving it in your face that you still are!
