The meaning of the word Truancy. Does anybody know?

I heard this word a while ago and I am too tired to look it up in some dictionary. I am online in mylot so might as well start a new discussion on it. I really have no idea on what this word is.

It means being absent from school without permission.

It means bunking off, or not turning up to work/school when you are supposed to without a good reason. It's a big problem with school children in the country where I live, they've started taking parents to court and fining them.
