Hes been sick with Pneumonia for about a week now. He has to go to the doctor every few days to get his breathing checked to make sure hes not getting worse. Well yesterday was a doctor day. They wanna put him on a steroid for 5 days which I am kinda scared to do. I do not feel comfortable with it at all. Also They want my son now checked for asthma. Hes 6 and never had any breathing problems. Can asthma occur in a kid just like that? I have no clue so any insight would be helpful.

When my daughter was little i went thru the same thing with her at an even younger age. We did the steroid treatment and it really helped the breathing , she also had pneumonia . They checked for asthma on and off for a few years after. Good news was she never had asthma as a true diagnosis. From time to time she would get brochitus and other colds and would end up on a breathing treatment at times until she got over the infection. In the end by the time she was 8 or 9 she outgrew all of these problems, and is a healthy, very active adult. Hang in there, i remember it being so scary at the time, but hopefully your son will also outgrow the problems. Don't be afraid of the breathing treatments, they do wonders for them as far as feeling better faster.

First of all, I'm sorry that your son is having such a hard time, and I pray that he recovers quickly. When my oldest was 18 months we had a bout of croup, rsv and then some more croup. he never got Pneumonia thank God. I think his was caused by where we were living, we were in an apartment complex, and found out later, that gasses from the sewer were leaking into our home.. He hasn't been sick since we left that place. ANyways, what they did for him, was put him on a nebulizer, and they put him on steriods. He had been on steriods before for something else.. (I can't recall what, I almost think it was another case of croup) I wasn't crazy about it, but We did see very fast results. They did ask us about a history of Asthma (which we don't have on either side) but he was too young at that time to do much testing. He is now 3, and runs and runs and runs, and has never shown any problems with breathing. Alot of times, I think they just want to rule it out as an option, so don't get too worried. Good luck to you and your little one..

At the hospital - my little girl at the hospital.
I have just been going through the same thing. Is there a history of asthma in your family? You, or his father maybe? Or any grandparents with any type of breathing problems? Is he around second hand smoke on a regular basis? If so, then yes, he could have just developed asthma just like that. Well, the genes would have had to have been there, but that stuff...like the smoke, and maybe pet dander, dust, pollen, mold, etc. made it flare up and make itself known now. What we have done is to put her on the steroid, which i was scared of doing as well, its called Pulmicort and its a nebulizer treatment, which my daughter has two times a day. They also put her on Singulair, for allergies. She takes that one time a day. And, she has done wonderfully! I quit smoking, and do not allow smoke around my daughter. We have removed all stuffed animals from her room because of dust mites, and we have got rid of her kittens as well, because of the dander. Also, you may want to switch to skim milk, because sometimes the milk fat in any other milk chokes them up. I switched to skim organic milk for my daughter. She loves it. Good luck! And, you are welcome to talk to me about this any time you need to!
