Alcohol Withdrawal?

My friend has took her boyfriend's money and refuses to let him waste it all on beer. He is an alcoholic, so he hast to have it. Today, I saw him out pan handling for money to buy beer. At the time, I did not know what he was doing, he just looked really lost to me.
I have read and I know a little of the medical stuff. But, does anyone know in layman's terms what the body experiences. I know that they get the shakes, but what else is involved. Is it a life and death situation? Please tell me, so that we can know what to look out for. I am very scared for him.

Oh that is so sad, it must be an awful thing to see a man do but he is very lucky to have people who really care about him, a lot of people don't have any support, I hope he gets himself together for everyones sake...
