Debate-Should death sentence be given or not

There is a big debate about death sentence.People in hospices,people in the clutches of clinical depression,people with crippling diseases,people who are starving,old people waiting for death to claim them,all these people have to contend with one cruel day after another.Look at the faces of prisoners doing time.There is a bleakness and lifelessness to them.Their's is a life without hope,without escape.Death for them would have been a preferred alternative.Given these circumstances I wonder whether life is'nt a more fitting punishment than death? What do you think?
