What do you think about the Christmas season and the meaning of Christmas.

With the holiday season fast approaching and all the stores having big sales my thoughts turn to what the holiday season means to people now. How many children know the true meaning of Christmas, or is it just a time for presents, family visits, and school break. As a child I remember how special Christmas was to us kids and we looked forward to the month of December. You didn't see that many decorations out in November, songs like "Away in the Manger" and "We Three Kings" were heard on the radio, not songs like "Grandma got Run Over by a Reindeer". We knew why Christmas was celebrated. Today kids make long lists of wanted gifts, and don't even think of what their reaction would be if they got a stocking with nuts, an orange, candy cane and a few coin in it. Stores have giantic holiday sales the day after Thanksgiving, and you can even see Christmas trees for sale before then. I think stores have taken "Christ" out of CHRISTmas, made us forget what a joyous season this is supposed to be and filled our lives with worry and stress due to gift giving.

i think a lot of people get out of hand around christmas time when it comes to shopping and forget what the true meaning of christmas really is. they forget about christ and id like to think they call it giftmas and think it is all about having the most presents. i could care less. as long as my family and i are all happy gifts dont matter.

I totally agree with you. As long as a family is together and has their health they should be thankfull. Christmas has turned into who will give the biggest, most expensive, or most gifts. We are not a big family but we draw names and try to give homemade gifts as they are made with our own time and love.

Christmas is a nice chance for us to feel warm and fuzzy inside and a nice excuse to hug your dad

I wish my dad was here to hug but even when he was I never needed an excuse. I come from a very loving & huggy type family. Now warm and fuzzy at Christmas time comes from doing something for someone or giving someone something they really needed.

Some of the local stores where I live had Christmas stuff out the day after Halloween! It was disgusting! I'm grateful my kids do know the meaning of Christmas, and that's what I feel blessed for this year. We've fallen upon hard times this year, and it's nice to know my kids are just as happy with a few small gifts than they are with the "big ticket" items. We just look forward to putting up the tree, baking cookies and spending quality time together. It;s just like people who look at New Years Eve as a big drunken party. We prefer to spend that as a family too. We make a bunch of snacks, watch movies and ring in the New Year as a family. It saddens me to see that the true meaning of the holiday has been lost on so many families.

I understand what you are saying. You may have fallen on hard times fiancially but you are rich in love, warmth and understanding. I remember one Christmas I did not have much money and when telling my daughter that Christmas was going to be slim picking because we were sorta poor at the moment she looked at me and said "we're not poor momma, we have love and that is most important". Out of the mouths of babes. We stay home on New Years also as there are too many drunk drivers out there and so much could happen. Besides, what a better way to bring in the new year than with the people who mean the most to you.
