My Blood pressure reacts badly to salt. Some people aren't affected by it, but I am. Do any of you eat something that tastes really good to you, but is low in salt? I'm tired of low salt peanut butter sandwiches as well as low salt tuna sandwiches. But I'm interested in all kinds of low salt food, not just sandwiches. Like I found a source for low salt mushrooms and that would be fun to. So what do you eat that is low salt? How do you prepare it? Take care

Hi, my husband has the same problem. The rule of thumb: If its canned, we don't eat it. The only exception is that there are no sugar added fruit cocktail that has a minimal amount if in water or pear juice. There is just an obscene amount of sodium in just about any canned food. I nearly fell over when "reduced sodium" chicken broth had over 500 mg per serving!
So we have replaced canned everything with fresh everything. And that has helped immensely.
We also use Mrs. Dash or herbs to season our foods and don't use any salt.
This way, the trace amounts of salt that naturally occurs in some foods he can eat just fine.
Another high sodium food is deli meats and bacon. We have made our own salad dressing with organic apple cider vinegar, honey and a few shakes of the "italian seasonings" bottle.
I guess I would just advise - if its in a can rethink it and read the label. And stay away from the deli counter. All the rest is about portion control. Liberally eat from the produce section, find your organic or natural supermarket for more choices too. Lean chicken you can make and eat - its all in how you prepare it, too. And turkey - periodically cook a real turkey, doesn't have to be thanksgiving sized and use the meat from that instead of from the dli counter.

There are some low sodium and low salt canned food. Right now, money is part of my problem, so natural and organic actually put even less food on my table. So are so right about most canned foods and esp. deli meats. Right now I use low salt cheese like certain varieties of swiss and provalone. I love honey, vinegar, and seasonings. Great advice, take care

I understand you are on a budget. So am I. There was a time in my life about 10 years ago when money was really tighter than it is now and I learned a lot from then - I gained weight and was just not feeling right on canned and boxed foods. I learned that you can fall into the trap of eating cheap fast foods and canned foods, when in fact with some planning, you can buy the uncanned equivelants and make it and freeze what you don't use and end up spending less than all the canned, etc. I kept saying "when i have more money i will eat better" but then I didn't have the energy to be able to do more to make that happen.
. It took some work but buying a small turkey every other week or so, buying certain veggies, etc went a lot farther than buying sandwiches or buying canned soups all week. THe initial investment was more but when you divided up into portions, I was eating for pennies compared to what i was eating on the boxed foods. And cutting out ALL fast food saved loads of money.
ANd I am not saying to buy everything organic - just the "worst offenders" - the items that tend to be the most chemical and sodium filled if not.

True, right now I have neither time nor money. I'm going to Physical therapy three days a week and working 4 days a week. Too tired inbetween. My husband is working four ten hour weeks and too tired inbetween. I only have money for gas and a few bills. I'm using my credit card for everything else. I wish I could have dried more food or I felt like gathering wild food, even spruce needles would be a help. Take care

I don't like the taste of salt, I just want to know what low salt foods people eat because I'm bored with the ones I'm eating. I don't want salt sub-stitutes that taste like salt. YUK!

Hey writersedge . . . I eat everything without salt because I can't stand how it alters the natural goodness of something. Anything. I think the best way to prepare low-salt or no-salt foodstuffs is use no-salt or low-salt items. If you have a food processor make a puree of tomatoes, onions, garlic, oregano, basil, thyme and a little rosemary for meats to be used in Italian-like dishes; for your Asian flair dishes add the marinade of oranges, soy, cinnamon, ginger and worcesterschire to beef or pork or chicken.
Experiment and yes it does take getting used to cooking with no salt besides using none extra at the table, but its worth it your palatte will thank you !
Fresh herbs are so much tastier than salt but don't leave out pepper !

I've always hated the way tons of salt make things taste, but fewer and fewer things have salt added. Some ginger, soy and worchestershire sauces have lots of salt so reading the label is important. I like the food processor idea a lot. I have never used my salt shakers (except to put salt on my steps!) I love pepper and spices, but I'm not really good at spices. Thanks for the great ideas and take care.

That depends on where you live and your activity levels, heredity, a bunch of factors.
