I enjoy the show, however, at the same time, how real are the techniques on the show? For example, how do we know there is a man out there at least similar to Grissom (though hard to believe) who would be willing to 'whack' a head made of ballistic jelly filled with real human blood to find the pattern of the splatter of blood. Even when it comes to their laboratory, in my opinion, our tax dollars definitely do not go towards a laboratory with glass walls, pretty blue lights, and the most high tech equipment. Is there realism in CSI?

Well according to the Slate at http://www.slate.com/id/114100/ They follow realism as far as the treatment of evidence goes but the charaters are another story. But there are also some things that are far from reality such as how long a case can be solved and the number of people involved in solving a case http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2003/01/19/PK126139.DTL

There is some realism in CSI as far as the tasks they perform. However, a typical city does not have all the equipment to run the extensive tests, the money to run the test (they often run a few thousand dollars), the well learned staff, and it definitely takes more than a few hours (usually weeks) to solve a case.

Some of the tests take months or years to run. Finger prints for instance take up to a year. There are billions of prints in the system and the computer has to analyze each and every print for a match.
Sometimes, prints are matched quickly if the search is narrow enough. But no, it does not take a few seconds to get a hit.
