How many of you know what a Speech Pathologist does?

Here in the Philippines only one college offers the course and so there aren't many of us here. Whenever I'm asked what I do for a living, I'd get a follow up question asking what I do, specifically. Since the late 80's, the University of the Philippines has produced only about 300 speech pathologists and so not many know of the profession unless they require treatment or therapy from them. How many of you out there know what a speech pathologist does? How common is that profession in your country?

It is quite common here especially dealing with children and adults with learning difficulties. We also have things like toast masters clubs for those who want to do public speeking for self confidence building.. Communication skills that we are equipped with help us in our confidence. In the U.K Speech Therapy is quite big.

Thanks for the response yanjiaren! Yeah.. In UK, Speech therapy is common unlike here in the Philippines. Children here get rather late intervention for speech and language problems because parents don't know where to bring their children for the help they need.
