Where to donate or volunteer

So not to sound falsely philosophical or anything, but I've been thinking lately that I've been pretty caught up in my own life and its been a while since I've volunteered or found any sort of cause to be passionate about. I came across an article recently that said collecting pop cans and cashing them in is a great way to make money, and I started thinking that if I got everyone in my neighborhood to start saving their cans for a few months, I could probably raise a decent amount. I thought maybe doing it to raise money to take a volunteer trip this summer, but chances are it would do way more good to just put the amount towards something, I'm just not sure where to donate it or what to do with it. Any good causes or suggestions?
