What is the difference between a hobby and an addiction. Don't they both incompass you and cause excessive spending and altering of your life to spend more time at it.

No, hobbies don't cause excessive spending and altering your life. They're pastimes. You do them along with you're regular life. If you needed to give them up, you could. An addiction is something you can't give up, even if it starts to hurt you. It consumes you and becomes your life.
