Does it work? I have never learned to swim. Then I had a close to fatal accident as a teen. I have been scared since then. I know that there are exercises that you can do in the shallow end, but I believe laps would be better. What is your opinion?

Regular swimming builds endurance, muscle strength and cardio-vascular fitness.Swimming burn calories at a rate of about 3 calories a mile per pound of bodyweight. If you weigh 150 lbs. and it takes you 30 minutes to swim one mile you will be using about 900 calories in one hour.
Now it is up to you to decide whether to swim or float.lol

Hi Rozie! Swimming is one of the best exercise as i was told by many. It strengthens your heart and lungs too. It is a full body exercise. Unfortunately, i never learned how to swim. haha..I just play tennis or badminton for exercise. take care and have a nice day. :)

If I could swim I would but then again I don't like wearing bathing suits so I avoid it unless I really have to. In my younger days I have jogged in a pool and did a exercise class in one too. But that was years ago.

I have a swimming pool which I am in as soon as it is warm enough. I swim as much as possible. It is one of the best exercises you can do. Doing water arobics in the shallow end is also good. What makes doing exercise in the water so go is the force of the water that you have to move through. It is like doing exercise with weights.

That I need to come over there, get you back in the pool and get you confident in the water. My introduction to swimming was when I was 2, and, no kidding, I got thrown into the deep end and left to fend for myself. No, I didn't even come close to drowning! lol. Dratt! Couldn't get rid of me like that. I'm not a strong swimmer, but i can hold my own, and probably assist someone else too. Mostly a child though, I'm a little on the short side! lol.
I'm sure there would be adult swim classes you could join that would teach you not only how to swim, but about water safety too. Here in Australia, you are considered odd if you can't swim! Get back on the horse, and don't give up!

Odd? Excuse me? They can consider me odd all they please. I will be safe on land. I have heard of people tossing little children in the pool in a sink or swim type of test. I understand that it is important to know how to swim where you are, but that sounds very traumatizing for any body, much less a two year old.

LOL. For me, being thrown in the pool like that was fun! It seems I was born with the ability to swim! Didn't the swimming instructor have a hard time keeping up!
It is important to know how to swim here, though the tourists still think they are invincible and that you can surf without knowing how to swim! lol. Um, not the case!

Swimming is fantastic exercise and very relaxing for those who love water. However, if it scares you, there are so many other exercises you can do out of the pool. You could join a gym, go for a run, play a sport, go kyacking, horseriding or anything. Don't ever feel like you are confined to doing exercise in one certain way if you don't feel comfortable doing it. Exercise should get to the stage where it relaxes you and takes you away from your day to day life for a while.

I used to go for swimming to swimming pool when I was studing in the schools and college. I think there is not anything to worry about swimming. Swimming is a very good exercise to keep onself fit. If you are afraid of swimming in the deep try to swim in the shore of the place where there is less water. I believe you should give it a try to learn swimming. It is not that hard as you think.

Hi,
I do swim for fun and pools are very rare in our places so mostly we go at sea or lakes or ponds. Rarely we go to swim pools. Still I like swimming those backstroke with out much effort. It also helps me as a part of exercise too. But mostly I do not see swimming as exercise I do it for just fun.

I am one of those unfortunate persons who didn't learn how to swim and to think that I grew up living near the sea. I'm not scared of the water so i don't understand at all why i haven't learned so. Anyway, yes, i've heard it's a good exercise because it makes almost all your body muscles work. It is even good for the lungs and heart too. Just look at the bodies of avid swimmers... they have toned muscles.
