Who is right about the creation of the world? Science or Religion

You have heard about the big bang theory, a bunch of gases formed and became a solid then blew up and since then have been expanding, which has been prooven scientifically that the universe is expanding. You have heard that GOD came along and paraphrasing here said "huh, this looks like a good place to start something" and bam, it all started. Okay so the real question here is what was here for the gases to have formed and where did the gases come from? If God created us, then how or by who was GOD created? And why was all of this created no matter how it got started, what was the purpose?
